is is easier to change out a barrel or just buy a new upper? The barrel on my ar is not threaded on the the end, I want to add a muzzle break.

Likely best to just get a new threaded barrel, not a new upper, and swap out the old barrel. Otherwise, you will need to spend the time and money getting the old barrel threaded. A cost difference of approx $50.

I read my last posting, it appeared to me that it could come off as being sarcastic. I just wanted you to be sure, that it was helpful and and I was thankful.

my redneck engineered receiver vice block 2/2 (take 4)
top and bottom mdf vice blocks sitting on a forged upper receiver

my redneck engineered receiver vice block 1/2
2 pieces of mdf,one with 3/4" holes for the take down pin lugs and one with routered out slot for picatini rail.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/123930/pri-barrel-nut-wrench-ar-15 its quite an easy thing to remove/install a barrel on an a r15.you need a barrel nut wrench $25 and some way of clamping the receiver in a vise i used mdf blocks for mine,or you can buy a vice block for $50 and up.you will need a punch to knock out the front sight pins.a torque wrench is best to ensure an exact torque on the barrel nut,but you can prob just wing it and snug it up just enough to get the gas tube through the next tightest position on the nut without fear of over tightening. here are some pics of what i made for my vice blocks
there are many vids online showing how to do this job,but beware any idiot can make a vid and post it on youtube.

go post it on arms list.com
gunlistings.org
to name a few, those are both free, but there are more popular sites as well as gunslot here, ask a moderator about the charge.make sure you ship only to an ffl,and do all appropriate paperwork in whatever states the sale and purchase will take place in.california will require mag locks and maybe more,so id not sell it here for ease of sale.

Howdy,
I have been trying to find photos of a weapon I used--that I liked--that was an m-16 with a
large bore shotgun under it. At the time in the early 70s--it was called an M-60.

Not only would it shoot semi and auto rounds with the 16, but I could 'lob' paint shells, shotgun pellets, exploding rounds, and more with the secondary. It was not particularly heavy but carrying all those large shells around was.....

It became an M203.
There is also an M203A1 which adapts to an M4

I loved the M79 but like you said you needed a
squad to carry enough ammo
