I am going to run a 15A circuit from my shop to the storage barn, about 100' away. I want to drive a grounding rod but don't know how deep it should be. Menards has them - 5/8" dia and 8' long. 8' seem a little overkill and would be quite a job to drive that deep. Any advice guys?

Don't worry about a ground rod, if your shop has one adjacent.
Run a 2wire with ground (black wire, white wire, bare wire) to the storage and be sure to carry the ground wire to all outlets and fixtures.

Grounding

Actually I'm using #4 wire which I know is way overkill. I have a lot of overhead power cable that I bought new from an electrical friend about 25 years ago. I've decided not to run this overhead but bury it in pvc pipe. I want to use that cable rather than just let it sit even more. I don't know what I'll do with the remainder. When I brought the power from the house to the shop 30 years ago I didn't (like a dummy) drive a ground rod. Hence my question about length. I know the type of soil is a factor but in central IN, we aren't exactly in a desert! Thanks guys,
