10mm moot in self defense situations? why?
i was reading about the 10mm cartridge in wikipedia, and it says that "The 10 mm's relatively flat trajectory has been regarded by some as MOOT in self-defense situations against human antagonists, given FBI statistics that indicate the average self-defense shooting takes place at 7 yards (21 ft) or less." heres the link I'm just another damn yankee with a loaded gun looking for some fun! |

that was pretty much the only negative line about its effectiveness in the whole article. the problem with wikipedia is that any dumbass can add to, or change an article. The 10mm round is very effective as a defense cartridge! the only problem the FBI had with it was over-penetration and heavy recoil for women and teny tiny male types. thats why .40S&W was born. less over-penetration and a little less recoil, with almost as good stopping power. the 10mm round has the effectiveness somewhere between a .357mag and a .41 mag. great round for stopping power, not so good for quick follow up shots

what about the .357 sig, does it have the effectivness somewhere between the 357 mag and 41 magnum?

is a little harder. It is one of my favorite defense rounds. It is basically a necked down 9mm bullet in a .40S&W casing which allows it to get some real good velocity (you can actually hear the crackle after shooting it). It does considerably more damage than 9mm, and is somewhat similar to .40S&W and .45ACP in wound channel. check out this ballistics comparison that Freedom uploaded...

Is that really your pooch?

huh?

I would say...
10mm for four legged threats
.357sig for two legged threats (although 10mm will create huge cavities in humans as well)

i've heard a lot of overpenetration issues with 357sig

At ranges of 7 yards or less even .22LR has a relatively flat trajectory. I'm just saying.

Out of a glock 20 its great. I am good out to 50 yards and enough power to take out a deer. In a self defense situation I like it. Powerful with some good hollow point expandable round would be great.

ted nugent swears by this round!small game, ducks, whatever.read his book:God,Guns and Rock and Roll

Alot of police are switching to this cartridge because it has enough power to penetrate windshields, and still stop the target.
So in my opinion the round would definatly be an over penatration threat for every day personal protection! Especially inside your home.
Again just my opinion, It is however a great round for it's intended purpose.

i always thought a 124 grain 9mm hollow point can kill an assailant even if inside car.

for a certain caliber. You can use .44 mag rounds that will not go through a human, but you can put a 45 fmj straight through. The bullet construction, more than the caliber, determines the amount of penetration. For instance, there are defense rounds designed for short barreled guns that will actually underpenetrate and overexpand if your fire them out of service weapon-length barrels.
