no contest

10mm....about 950fps to 1400fps in available factory loads, bullets from 135 to 230gr
5.7......speeds up to 2000fps, but 55gr is the heaviest loaded bullet I've seen--most are 40gr or smaller.

10mm has the better wounding capability of the 2. 10mm=deep wide hole, even with 950fps (.40SW spec) JHP loads....5.7 shallow small hole. Neither produces true rifle-like wounding ability like the .223, 6.8, etc.

both

Both cartridges are considered 'hotrods'....delivering some kind of performance outside standard service calibers like 9/40/45.

The 5.7 has very poor wounding capability (9mm creates wider/deeper wounds) and it's touted ability to penetrate certain barriers is restricted by the type of ammunition used.

10mm simply has a lot of velocity and bullet weight/sectional density available....... 0.40"+ width, bullet weights to compete with or exceed .357 Mag and .45acp, and the combo can yield a lot of barrier penetration, extended range/power with standard commercially available ammo. It's a handful, but if you require a semi-auto handgun with the above, I don't see many better options than the ol' 10.

The 5.7 was designed to defeat armored threats, but since AP ammo for it is so hard to get, it's really in the same category as the Desert Eagle. Too big to conceal, not really good for much, but it looks cool at the range. The FN five seven can penetrate 32 layers of kevlar the FN P90 can do 48 layers, but only with AP ammo.
