what does the numbers on the names stand for, e.g. magnum .45. what does the .45 mean?

heres what caliber means:
the diameter of the bore of a gun taken as a unit of measurement.
and when you know the caliber of a gun you will know the type of bullet it takes---hense magnum .45 take 45 caliber bullets. 45 is the measurement of the bore/barrel/muzzel

Don't know why no one mentioned that .45 is the measurement in inches across the bore (diameter). The bullet is usually .451 inches across for sealing purposes as the bullet travels down the barrel. Hope that helps.
