.308 AR

Hello, my friends!
I have a project in mind, but I'm not sure how difficult it would be.

I want to build a .308 on an AR platform, but I'm not sure what I need to start with.
1. Would a standard AR lower work, and if not, can I get one that will?
2. If I had to use a non-standard lower, would standard AR lower internals work?

Any help with these questions would be appreciated.
I'm quite sure this has been done, and I know I can get complete rifles. I want to build it myself, and I need ideas on where to start.
Thank you all for your help!

REAP!!!

I "think" all the AR components will work excepting the bolt carrier group and the barrell.
Then again, I've been wrong before.
Reaper308 will conduct this class for us.

AR 15 (.223/5.56) lower will not work with a (.308/7.62) magazine

So you need to pick up an AR10 lower.

The lower parts kits are pretty much the same, though the buffer and buffer tubes are different.

ISD, thanks a bunch. That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. Also, would I need a special bolt and carrier for this configuration? Seems like you would to handle the power.

ISD is right. You'll need a 308 receiver and parts.

First you'll want to decide if you want to use the SR-25 or Armilite platform. They're different. If you google Armilite vs DPMS pattern or Armilite vs SR-25 pattern you'll get a lot of info. Parts for a SR-25/DPMS pattern rifle are more readily available. I like P mags and they're only available for DPMS/SR-25 pattern rifles.

There's a lot of info here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_62/378850_.html

DPMS, LaRue, LMT, POF, KAC and others all use variations of the SR-25 platform

Noveske uses Armilite

I believe Bushmaster, RRA and HK use proprietary stuff so it's not interchangeable

Mega's MA-TEN upper and lower are compatible with both Armilite and SR-25 pattern components

RE: Your info

Thanks for the help, Reaper. I was arguing with my roomie about it but he kept swearing an AR-15 lower would work but I kept saying 'I don't think so'. I found the parts I need, and can get them fairly cheap. I would rather not buy a complete rifle as I want to build it myself. Call it practice.

Thanks for all your help, friends.

there are a ton of calibers that can use a standard AR15 lower, .308 just isn't one of them

correction

I need to correct something I posted above. I said "I like P mags and they're only available for DPMS/SR-25 pattern rifles."

I was unaware that as of this year's 2012 SHOT Show, Armilite just released a lower that will accept P mags. It seems that they realize that they're being left behind and need to change to keep up. That said, I would still look hard at the MA TEN if I was doing a 308 build.

Here is an article about the Armilite:

Reaper and a .308

Reap,
You ever use the .308 magazines that LaRue manufactures?
