Cost

If you don't mind, what is the cost of building a .308 AR?

havent landed on a scope yet.I used a leupold vx1 3-9x40 on my lil AR,was thinking maybe a
vx2 4-12x50,this time.certainly will not be buying a $500+ scope, but i am willing and almost would feel funny not buying some good glass around 400+.any suggestions?i prefer american made products, and try to stick to that as much as i can :)

Jay-Scope

I know, finding a good scope in the price range you want is hard isn't it? It is for me. For that price range, have you ever thought of a Zeiss conquest 3x9. I think they are right around 400 or so. A friend of mine has 2 and I've looked through them, very clear. They of course aren't American. They are European. German I believe. Weaver tactical has a scope in that price range as well, Im pretty sure the tactical line is American made and I believe the tactical line runs in the 450-500 range.

thanks for the scope input...ill check them out, really interested.id use european, but in totaly not ok with spending 2k in all american gun parts to just quit at the end and cheap out and use a chinese or philipine made scope. no matter how "good"it is at this point i gotta go american or european if i can for a truly quality optic, that will have a resale value if i ever need to sell it...

coppertop price

prices change considerably between brands, models and platform (dpms/armalite/SR25).
mine is a billet set from mega arms aprox 700$.you don't "need billet,or mega arms version,if you want a shooting rifle that is somewhat lighter id just buy dpms compatable lower and build from that.my build should be around 2k

PARTS USED ARE
mega MA-ten aprox $700
JP supermach barrel/bolt/gas block $700+
chrome dpms bolt carrier&misc carier group parts aprox $200
jp adjustable trigger/home modified dpms hammer $100+
jp 12" modular ff handguard $200+
other misc pins/detents/magpul furniture etc $200-

this is a purpose built gun (my first, and only my second build) this weapon is built purely for hunting/long range so i justified buying higher end parts.you could probably build using mostly dpms compatable parts for 1200-1600 depending mostly on barrel,lower/upper,hand guard.hope this was some help to you.when can we expect to hear about your build???

Thank you

The list of guns that I want get is long. I really enjoy shooting the AR platform and would like one to hunt whitetail deer with. It will be awhile before I have the spare cash. I promised my kids that I would get them a collie and they aren't cheap.

.308 AR for hunting

I've only personally had experience with one .308 AR, and it was a DPMS full size M16 clone in .308, all stock, and the guy who owned it and I were hitting old fire extinguishers welded to rebar poles more often than not at about 745 yards up a hill, so don't think you absolutely have to build your own to get great accuracy. Jay, as far as glass goes, Leupold still has great hunting scopes in your price range, as I'm sure you already know. They really start tacking on dollars with their mil dot reticles, but since rangefinders are so much more affordable and their turrets provide such consistent POI adjustments, mil dot or stadia reticles for hunting are more of a cool guy thing than a necessity, as is an illuminated reticle, since most animals have to be shot during daylight hours. If you haven't already checked it out, why not look at the Leupold Rifleman in 4-12 x 40.
