with the old military 55 grn. the army said 460 meters, than the usmc said with the 62grn.600 meters.these are with a 20 in.you might loose about 150/200 fps. so it will still be close.know if you are reloading.using 75-80grn vld's many are getting very good out to 1000 yrd's.

depends on what you mean by max range. Max range in the military is the farthest the bullet will travel, and the 5.56 is listed as 3600 meters. Max effective range, which is defined as the maximum range at which an average soldier is expected to have a 50 percent hit probability with one round (or one burst for machine guns) for the M4 with 14.5 in barrel is listed as 500 meters for a single (point) target and 600 meters for group (area) target. The ranges listed for the M16A2 is 550 point tgt and 800 area tgt. These are, of course, general ranges in a manual, but there ya go.

From what i hear most of military guys that have combat experience with the 556 wouldn't give a hoot for it. They say no penetration for firing at targets even under light cover.

From what I hear

from soldier with combat experience (wait, that's me) the 5.56 works fine in urban settings. I have not shot anyone at over 200 meters, so I wouldn't know that. The complaints, however, stem from the fact that the round penetrates too much at longer ranges. The "green tip" M855 round will penetrate a steel helmet at 600 meters. It was designed to defeat soviet body armor and is not particularly well-suited against thin-skinned people at impact velocities of less than 2400 fps and at about 200 meters and further through the 14.5 inch barrel of the M4 it doesn't have that velocity.
