7.62x54r ammo

Hello, people.
My roommate just got a deal on a Mosin-Nagant M91/30. We were wondering what was the best brand of ammo for the money?
Cost is something of an issue, but we are willing to spend a little more for quality.
He intends to hunt as well as target shoot with it, and would like some more ideas, we found online reviews for Winchester brand and they say it's really good.
What do you guys think?

I have found the cheap 20 round paper rapped bundles of surplus ammo to be very accurate in my Mosin-Nagant. I can only think of two companies off the top of my head that produce ammo in 7.62x54R. Norma and Sellier and Bellot, with the S&B certainly being cheapest. I didn't know winchester produced ammo for it as well.

My Nagants don't care what type of ammo I use, so I usually look for the best deals (price wise). I usually end up with the Russian steel cased stuff. I've never had any issues with Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, or Golden Bear FMJ's or SP's in any of my Nagants. If you'll be using it to hunt, you may want to look into something a little better.

Clean very well after each run to the range?

Many do not take into consideration Surplus ammo, where it comes from and what corrosive ball ammo can really do to a bore when they are used to shooting clean US ammo..

Are the ammo manufacturers I use in mine. The corrosive stuff is usually found in the Soviet military surplus tins-so if you buy that, make sure your rifle gets a thorough cleaning soon after shooting. If the box doesn't say it is non-corrosive, you may well want to assume that it is.

Thanks, guys

Thanks for all the tips! I had a M44 years ago and I shoot surplus in it, had no problems at all. But this 91/30 will be used for hunting, and we want the best kill factor we can get for our money.
Thanks again!

I was looking at some golden bear and it was only about $11 a box, definitely wouldn't pay $18 even for golden!

Thanks for the advice, guys! We found some good clean surplus at a local gun store, non-corrosive, shoots great, $22 for 50. And it shoots great!
Thanks again!

ak sks mosin ect have a bore larger than the standard american/nato .308 ak and sks usualy at .310 and mosin around .311-.312 so amo loaded with .308 will generaly not get the best results.i use wolf with suprisingly good results.feed them what they were designed to use i say.
