is it to learn acoustic guitar? I've tried to pick up bass long long ago, so I have a very crude understanding of how a guitar works.

Lately, I've been getting all these great idea's of songs in my head (and I have a basic mastery of reading/writing music) but I can't exactly put it into song without the proper tools. So I've decided to teach myself to play acoustic guitar,

so, those of you guitar junkies/veterans any tips/pointers? Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to the brand of acoustic to pick up that'd be more than welcome.

Please bear in mind that I don't work because I'm just like that and I don't have all that much money (part of the reason why I'm teaching myself after all) but I don't care about that stuff, I just want to make music.

Suggestions, points, advice, anything?

of guitar books starting with #1 and start at the first page and go from there, sounds simple right, well heres the key:practice, practice, practice! It's monotonous and boring and you have to do it,learn the chords and practice, learn the strums and practice, carry the guitar everywhere with you if you can, when you first start out about 20 minutes of practice is gonna be all you can do until you drive yourself silly, heres another key:you have to be prepared to be really bad at something before you can be good at something and unless you are a savant you are gonna suck at guitar for about 3 years, somewhat passable at 5 years and finally liking it at 6 years, yep it gets better after 6 years of PRACTICE,then your gonna fuck up and want to stand up and play and you will go back to sucking all over again,Heres another key:if you sing it's easier to learn songs, because if you sing you can learn to strum and play 3 chords and sing and you will entertain yourself( YOURSELF) everybody else will think you suck until you hit 6 years, don't bother with a guitar teacher as they will go get their Hal Leonard book and open it to page 1 and you will pay them to do it! tip: you tube has lots of guitar rifs and videos on how to play songs, playing along with those helps the suckiness level go down, practice, practice, practice.

He inspired and taught generations. Brilliant guy and a fine musician. Anybody who wants to knock him should first try to play his stuff. If they have any brains at all, that will shut them up. It's impossible to find a top flight professional guitarist, in whatever genre, who doesn't respect him, and doesn't acknowledge their debt to him.

Acoustic Guitars

I bought a 1955 Martin D-18 back in '62 when I moved to Indy. 3 finger picks & very light strings. I studied piano for 8 years so I could read music but applying it to the strings was a different story. Fortunately I met a few guys at my new job that played. They helped me a lot though they made fun of my style of music. As others have said PRACTICE and don't worry, your fingers will quit bleeding after a while & will develop caliouses.

I missed that part Bob

"Please bear in mind that I don't work because I'm just like that and I don't have all that much money". Now perhaps what we are dealing with here is a cause & effect situation!
