Advice on shotguns
I am getting a shotgun for the only 3 purposes. Skeet, Pheasant and Turkey. I have a Mossburg 500 so I don't need that suggestion. Here are my needs: 12/20 Gauge Pump As I have said before I am very knowledgeable in pistols and other areas but shotguns are a new area to me. So let the suggestions fly. Shakleford
but I love my Remington 1187! Are you looking for a pump or Semi?
sytasyn_syn
Pump.
Does anyone own the Benelli Nova?
I have held and shot on and love the feel. Just wondering about performance beyond the 6 rounds I shot.
Shakleford
prides themselves on their duck guns(Which can get pretty wet and mucky) so I wouldn't worry about performance from them.
Eric1911
hit more birds with it, more so than with my remington mohawk, also have used it for skeet great gun
Ishootdaily
one of the Greats...
john kelley
Killed my first deer at 175 yards with a wingmaster I actually killed two deer that day with that gun
Shakleford
The Benelli is a good choice......I've shot a couple and liked them just fine! Of course you have the tried and true Remy 870, but whats wrong with your Mossy 500........just wanting something different?
Eric1911
you'll definitely like the benelli over and 870
sytasyn_syn
Lets stay in my price range please...the Wingmaster is $785.
I have no problem looking looking things up myself.
It would help if I could get a link to the one everyone tells me, considering there are a bunch of versions of the same model.
Thanks
sytasyn_syn
I would like something different...but that is only half the reason.
I have a mossy 500, however it is an 18 1/2 in barrel with pistol grip. It is registered as a pistol and I sometimes carry it to work. My brother has a full mossy 500 and I like them but I am looking for something different. I can't have the same one as my brother! Haha
Shakleford
The Remington Spartan......a over-under for around $600. Not the best choice for Turkey, but great for Skeet and Pheasant!

I enjoy my Winchester 1300 for skeet and bird hunting. Not too pricey and has always done what I need it to.

Saw this review today on the Weatherby PA-08 and thought of this post...

(my vote is the Berretta A400, best shotgun I've ever handled...but that's not exactly what you're looking for...)

I've had pumps, semi auto, side by sides and O/U.
The Mossberg Silver reserve is my current field gun. It's a well made inexpensive O/U.
I found that the 3rd round or more of the tube mags was usually fired in vain.
It comes with 5 choke tubes, select fire for top or bottom first.
I picked mine up NIB on sale for under $400.
It will handle 3" mags also.
My 2 cents
luckybychoice
for the silver reserve Mossberg, trap, pheasant or duck if it flys,it dies.
Larry Wagner
Have to agree with ya both that S/R Mossberg is is a keeper
luckybychoice
it is an O/U 12 gauge,a little heavy when compared to other "high-end" trap shotguns(which i like as i believe it helps me control my swing and follow thru better),of course at the range when we start switching off shotguns and i get a 2800.00 shotgun in my hands i'm so used to mine that i don't shoot the expensive one as well, mine cost 425.00 used from SCHEELS in Iowa City,IA.Have a look at STOEGER shotguns, they are manufactured in Turkey and have a real good reputation among the guys in my trap league. They do have pump action camoflagued 12 gauges,i tried to get on their site but kept getting kicked off, maybe you will have better luck.
Vaquero
It was lighter than the Moss SR but, without the choke tubes, it was not nearly as versatile. I kinda hated to take it out in bad weather which is what quail hunting is all about. So, I trade 1 gun for 2 and cash. The safe queen is gone.
BTW, my SR came from Big5. They put on some nice sales sometimes.

go with a 870. The action is really smooth. There are plenty of models out there to choose from (same with the 500 or 590 if you stay with mossy). You can find one in your price range. The last shotty that I got was the 870 desert tac recon. I love it. I can't remember, but I think I paid about $550 or $600... but there are cheaper 870's out there.

I also have a mossberg 835 ulti-mag that is set up for turkey. It takes up to 3 1/2". Mine came with a smooth bbl and turkey choke, but there are packages that sell them with a rifled "slugster" bbls for slugs as well or combos with both bbls. Mine is Mossy oak break up pattern with fiber optic sights. They offer these in lots of different camo patterns and stocks. I got mine for under $400 (can't remember exact price), but its been a reliable shotty. This may be a better turkey/pheasent/skeet gun than the 870 above. They'll both work great, but the 870 I posted above has a 18.5" bbl and is more of a tacitical shotty. My 835 has a 24" bbl and takes 3 1/2" turkey loads.
.. by the way 3 1/2" 00 kicks like a roofied ebear getting cornholed

Afraid if I layed it down I couldn't find it.
Good looking shotty.
I have grown fond of my Mossy 500.
24in is kind of short but does good
on skeet.
Reaper308
I may be wrong. It might be 26". I still think its 24", but wouldn't bet my $$ on it. Now that you called me out on not knowing how long my own shotgun bbl is, I'm going to check when I get home. Damn I have too many guns.
Sytasyn- I've never owned a nova, but I've shot skeet with one once and it felt pretty nice. I think they take up to 3 1/2" loads as well.
CharlesW
I never said anything about yours.
Mine is a youth model
I'm not a big guy so it felt good
I bought it
Reaper308
I aint two gud wiht reedin and im easley cunfused

I would do your research...But you couldn't convince me of using anything other then a Remington 870 Super Magnum for the things you want all in one gun.
Vaquero
I had a rem 870 magnum express. Quite the POS. Sorry, just the facts. I sold it to a guy for 100 bucks, he called up complaining and wanted his money back. I told him to part out the choke tubes and barrell and use the reciever for a fishing weight. No shit. Stay away from the express magnum remmie.

Nothing wrong with a 24 --- Agree
Didn't I say mine does good on skeet? ---- I think so, but I'm not sure. I should probably re-read that part

I'm southpaw so I shoot a Browning BPS in 20ga. Its a bottom eject without an open action to catch dirt, brush, and feathers. It ain't made for combat, but you can still find them brand new at gun broker in 12 ga for around $400.
The 12ga. model has a magazine block to engage and drop what is in the chamber and pop a different shell in..Like when you see a coyote while hunting birds.
sytasyn_syn
Thanks everyone!
I think I am going to hold the Nova and the 835, see which feels better in my hands.
Reaper308
I got my 835 at Walmart 3 or 4 years ago for something like $329 or $349. It was quite a bit more $$ at Cabelas and other retailers. Good deal if you ask me, I've never had any problems with it. Its my "abuse the shit out of it" camping/field shotgun. You may want to check wally worlds around your area, I still see them in stock every once in a while around here.

The Remington Model 870 was the fourth major innovative design in a series of Remington pump action shotguns. John Pedersen designed the original fragile Model 10 (and later he improved the Model 10 creating the Model 29). Working closely with John Browning, Pedersen also assisted in the design of the Model 17 which was much later adopted by Ithaca as the famous Ithaca 37 and also served as the baseline design for the Remington 31. The Remington Model 31 was consistently considered to be an excellent shotgun, but struggled for overall sales in the shadow of the popular Winchester Model 12. Remington sought to correct the slow sales by introducing in 1950 a streamlined, modern, rugged, relatively inexpensive and reliable, the Remington 870 Wingmaster.
Sales of the 870 have been consistently steady. The sales reached 2 million guns sold by 1973 (This was significant and over ten times the number of Model 31 shotguns the 870 replaced). By 1996, aided by the basic "Express" model, sales of the shotgun topped seven million guns. The Remington 870 holds the record for best selling pump action shotgun in United States history.
browningboy96
I would go for a remington 887 I don't own one but I have shot one. It has a really smooth action
Doomguard
Excellent shotgun at a reasonable price. You want a bird gun, the 870 is the one. Numerous models available, excellent reliability, in your price range.
How well the shotgun comes to your shoulder and how well it tracks when you swing it are probably more important than how it feels when you pick it up, imo.
runawaygun762
I've only shot flying clay pigeons once, and that was with one of those red hand throwers. I need a semi because I'm pretty sure I'll miss. A lot.
