Afghanistan Strategy

My father is currently serving in Afghanistan. He is an E4 Specialist in the U.S. Army. When I ask him how things are going and what we are getting done over there, he says that they are getting nothing done. They aren't allowed to leave the roads, they can't fire unless fired upon, and can't engage an enemy within a certain distance from a mosque (so now the enemy knows where to hide). His battalion is about to allow the Afghan Army to run their FOB. They will be fighting the Taliban out of there in 2 weeks. I can't help but wonder what our military leaders are thinking or if they even think at all. I love our military but they need some leadership help. Please comment and if anyone has any clue on what the plan is from here let me know.

rugerman94...good luck

with your military career..in this country our military is sworn to uphold the policy's of its civilian leadership..so thats where the problem lies not in our military leaders...who by all accounts our very well able to run a war...IMHO

I have reasons for the things I do, just don't expect them to be reasonable

Some of the others are correct in stating that many military objectives and policies are actually not under the control of the military leaders, but rather political leaders using their influence to misguide a war even if unintentionally... This is like going to a race engine shop and telling them how to build your engine better than they do already based on no actual experience yourself... Vietnam is another terrible example of this misguided approach to warfare...

I wish your dad well for your sake too!

Afghanistan was not that bad when I was there, but there are lots of rules about not firing until you are fired upon, and holding mosques as sacred no kill zones. They do use them for hide outs too, but we played in caves mostly..
