All hail gun guys

Gotta question? I am wanting to rebuild my dads 1911 now on the main spring (the big one) what is the difference the 10lb, 14lb so on and so on. Thats the only part that needs to be replaced

If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?

Good going there Daisy.. didn't even notice Jeff's new avatar.. think the old one was yellow to right.. Course we've gone and screwed up a gun thread again (just noticed and to lazy to change)..

How come we haven't answered Jeffs question on the recoil spring.. excuse me, by the book it's helical recoil spring #5013200.. Really is, but book doen't specify spring lb, and i can't remember what the standard is..

a man has to hold his word, hold his beliefs, and hold a good sight picture.

LOL !!
I don't know anything about various springs Greg, all I know are the 'stock from the factory' ones. As long as the gun gutz all work and the bullet gets out the hole I'm content :<))
I grew up on MilSpec, it's not easy changing....

Was a sign now what I was asking was when I was looking in brownells they had different weight springs for the main spring I just want to be able to shoot it with no problem

counseling LOL
But just briefly, the heavier recoil spring would be for a gun firing a higher power (hotter) cartridge.
Standard recoil springs perform "as advertised" with almost anything you feed the gun. The discussion about heavier springs tends to speak of the greater wear on parts slamming together and wearing as a result of shooting "hot" loads. On the other hand some folk think heavier spring will cause wear going the opposite direction, into battery.
If the gun is older it's a good idea to replace the spring, for exact advice you can ask Brownell's cust service.
I'd avoid advice from blogs and shadetree gunsmiths, they enjoy hearing themselves talk :<)

Did I help or did I confuse? I try

http://www.midwayusa.com/find?userSearchQuery=1911A1+.45+recoil+spring

•Factory 1911 recoil springs are 16 pounds in 45 ACP, 14 pounds in 38 Super, 9mm Luger, 38 Special Midrange, Colt Ace 22 conversion kit, and 19 pounds in 40 S&W.

•The Delta Elite 10mm uses a dual factory spring rated at 23 pounds. Single recoil springs require that the Delta Elite recoil spring guide be replaced with a standard 45 ACP recoil spring guide.

•The coils in this spring are not spaced evenly.

•Variable power springs are typically used on compensated pistols or when shooting lighter target ammunition.

•Recoil springs fit over a pistol's guide rod and control how the pistol's slide functions.

•In general, heavy loads need heavy springs and lighter loads need lighter springs. There is no hard and fast rule as to how much "Spring" a pistol needs. Too light a spring and the pistol opens and closes early and hard, increasing the felt reoil and battering the frame. Too heavy a spring and the slide is hard to open and may not cycle completely, jamming the pistol.

•Shooters who are using +P ammunition or self defense ammunition will likely need heavier recoil springs.

•Shooters who are using target ammunition may be able to use lighter recoil springs.

•Installation requires disassembly and reassembly of the pistol.

•Every recoil spring package contains a free extra power firing pin spring.
