I'm curious, but I'm also a bit concerned... is anyone besides me having difficulty finding ammo for handguns? The nearest town of any substantial (250,000) size is 50 miles from me. I haven't looked there yet, but none of the local mom & pop gun stores within 25 miles seem to have anything but .22 ammo readily available. There's one gun store in my town, Wal-Mart, and numerous pawn shops, but local ordinances prevent the pawn shops from selling ammo... WalMart's been out for a couple of weeks, the gun store had some but it was already spoken for... I stopped at another gun store this morning (20 miles away) when I got off work and he said he didn't know when he could get any. I have enough to defend myself, but what if the zombies come? What then? I might need to get a 30-30 rifle 'cause everywhere I checked had plenty of that, although some of the boxes were a bit dusty. Feedin' the till, for the "Simulous" Bill (since 1974)

Someone is buying up the handgun ammo as soon as it comes in. Some of the bigger gun stores are still supplied and you can still get stuff mail order, but prices have gone way up. Wal-Mart has all the shotgun shells you could ever want, but nothing in 9mm .45, etc. I got down on my knees to stare at the bottom shelf and found a couple boxes of 223.

The dems have got to see what they are doing. Clinton and Obama have been the best salesmen the shooting industry has ever hoped for. Ammo has nearly doubled in price and it is still flying off the shelves. Normal hunting rifles are safe for quite some time, so people aren't worried about buying those up. It's interesting that so many people who really aren't into the shooting sports are buying any magazine-fed rifle they can just because they are worried about never being able to buy one again. If Obama got on TV and vowed to veto any and all gun control legislation that comes across his desk, he would lose a bunch of Dem votes next term, but I guarantee he would still be reelected and have all the rest of his agendas dealt with in a truly bipartisan manner.

When we are fighting a war on two different fronts, Uncle Sam gets his ammo first, before anyone else. Police Depts. are next in line, then what's left over goes to the public for it's consumption. With the new administration in DC, they've put a scare into the public about guns and ammo and their unknown future. It's kind of like when people are told of an up coming snow storm, they go buy all the milk and bread faster than the stores can put it on the shelves. I believe the new administration is an up coming snow storm. I pray I'm wrong but, I prepare for the worst. So with the wars on both fronts and add in the fright of the new administration making the general public hoard up ammo and guns, ammo is going to be low and cost more until one of these draws of ammo peaks and begins to level back out to normal. I reload and have at least 10 to 20 thousand brass cases in the calibers I shoot. I also have several pounds of powder and thousands of primers and bullets. That's why I haven't felt the ammo pinch yet. The last time I looked all my reloading supplies were still at their regular prices. I may go ahead and buy a couple of pounds of powder that I'm a little low on and a couple cases of primers along with a few hundred bullets in the calibers I use the most.

I have to admit it is pretty bad, but if you go to walmart at about 2 in the mornin when they are stocking shelves (they get supply trucks every day) you can buy all the major handgun ammo, and it's still regular price not really high like alot of gun and pawn shops.
ebear
that is good to know, im gonna try that.

Wal mart here doesn't sell ammo between the hours of 10 pm and 7 am, and they only get ammo every week or two. Damn me for not having a 38 Super. That and 44 Mag are the only handgun rounds Wally world never seems to ruut of here.

Every time I visit a gun shop I talk to people about ammo and ask their opinion. I asked the guy who sold me my new Ruger today and he said he thinks it is because of the credit supply situation. He said the gun business works on a 'delay basis' where someone will say, 'OK. I'll spend $5 million. Send me the stuff today and I'll send you $2 million, then later on $x million--that sort of thing. With banks nbeing tight on credit, he thinks this is one reason the supply issue is so nad.
I mention this because it's kind of a different answer than the usual "People are hording" that some folks (like Ignatius Piazza) are saying.
Just passing it on. This shop has been open a zillion years. they know their business.

for 7.62x39... I was in a place called TARGET WORLD, located in Sharonville (Cincinnati) Ohio. They have pallets of battle packs. That was seven days ago.

I have 4 Walmarts within 5 miles of me. I found that if you go develope a friendship with the Walmart employees, they will tell you when they expect a shipment. I call in the morning, if they received any, they will set it aside for me to pick up.
The Meijer stores around here also stock ammo, they are more expensive than Walmart, but a lot of people do not know that Meijer stocks ammo.
