However something truly amazing has happened. Our money has been based on market value since the days of Richard Nixon's so-called, Wage, Price, Rent Freeze. By executive order he used the Power of the Presidency to Freeze Wages, Prices and Rents for 90 days while he did a deal with the Fed and Congress in order to shift our monetary system from a precious metals standard to a market based standard. Normally then the President orders the mint to print up lots of new money and get it distributed out among the people, through the Federal Reserve Banks System in the form of low interest loans. However whenever a president does this it generally causes a devaluation of the dollar. However, right befor President G.W. Bush left office, he ordered the mints to print up over 2 trillion dollars in new curency and such a large cash order from the mint would almost guarantee a freefall in the value of the dollar on the market, but guess what happened? The value of the dollar INCREASED! It was astonishing. So much so that just days after President Obama was sworn in, he ordered another 2 trillion dollars from the mints, and guess what? The value of the dollar increased again. A market based dollar, more often than not is less volatile than and precious metals backed dollar. The market is a very fickle thing. I would be willing to bet if President Obama wanted to get very clever and bring around a lot of conservatives to his way of thinking, at the time, even anouth 2 to 4 trillion dollars could be printed up, with nothing but the faith of the market to guarantee its value, the dollar would increase in value again and some consumable commodities, like gasoline and foodstuffs will go down, icluding important food stuffs like sugar, rice, flour, pork bellies (bacon) and natural gas and non precious metals and semi precious metals will go down as the value of the dollar increases. But we have to be careful about this because a dollar that is too strong on the market can intimidate the market and cause different kinds of problems. It's a delicate balance, but one way to solve the problem would be to get rid of the Fed all together and allow the Treasury Dept. to control interest rates directly like it was under the Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.
