LA gets 25% of its power supply from AZ... and they are threatening to boycott our state? Not too smart. I think we show show them a lesson... Story below:

An Arizona utility commissioner said he's willing to pull the plug on Los Angeles if the city goes through with a boycott of his state.

In a letter to the city of LA, a member of Arizona's power commission said he would ask Arizona utility companies to cut off the power supply to Los Angeles. LA gets about 25 percent of its power from Arizona.

"That is one commissioner who has that idea -- whether he can do that or not is another idea," said LA Councilman Dennis Zine. "They are the ones who have to make the move, not us."

The commissioner's power grid play is in response to the city's approval of a resolution directing city staff to consider which contracts with Arizona can be terminated.

Here's part Arizona Corporation Commission member Gary Pierce's letter to the mayor:

If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation.

I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.

The full text was sent to the blog Hot Air.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is in Washington D.C., meeting with Mexican President Felipe Calderon, but his deputy chief of staff issued the following statement: "The mayor stands strongly behind the city council and he will not respond to threats from the state that has isolated itself from an America that values freedom, liberty and basic civil rights."

Councilmember Tom LaBonge said he'd like to talk with Pierce. LaBonge said the city needs to look into its long standing utility agreements with Arizona.

LaBonge met Wednesday morning with LA Department of Water and Power officials.

"We have right of ownership of the power plants," LaBonge told NBCLA. "We partially own them."

Other California cities, including Oakland and San Francisco, have passed similar measures.

On Tuesday, Berkeley became the latest California city to boycott Arizona. The City Council voted unanimously to restrict staff from traveling to the state on city business.

SB 1070 -- here's the text of the law -- empowers local law enforcement to check the immigration status of suspects they have stopped for other reasons if there is a reasonable suspicion they are in the country illegally. The law specifically bars police from racial profiling.

The Arizona Republic newspaper recently asked a panel of experts to outline how the law would work in real-world situations. The experts' interpretations varied when it came to what happens at the point a law encforcement officer can or should ask about a person's status.

Actually i stand corrected on the amount of power.. it was my understanding that we were the primary supplier of power.. maybe we supply more than other states..whatever i love, and think we all do, the idea of a "push back"..

My fear is that given Obarrys open negative statements re: 1070 im thinking any effort to curtail power supply (remember this would be "intrastate") could result in the Feds marching in and pretty much push an armageddon issue.. whats that whole 2012 thing again.. wow..

I think that Arizona was supplying California with water up until the early 1980's. Water and power are both utilities, so perhaps a case can be made. Just thinking out loud.

Well

This is certainly gaining a lot of attention...I am surprised that more conservative talk shows have not gotten behind Arizona, or maybe I am just not seeing it over here. I hope they will...things are changing, maybe not fast enough but Americans are seeing what's happening. Glenn Beck just showed that 17 of the 25 Movers and Shakers on Amazon.com are about the founding fathers, God, politics etc and 11 of those books have been highlighted on his show!!! Keep it up...support Arizona, keep calling shows on TV, radio...write letters...give em hell!!! Arizona, will be ok...I am pretty sure. They might need to weather the initial storm...but it will pass. If the Cubans and the Iranians can make it through international sanctions, so can AZ. They may need to adjust who they work with on things...but they can.

all over this. Boston city council decided to boycott AZ so the stations started ranting about boycotting Boston. With all the troubles we have here in Mass and especially Boston maybe they should just worry about our own state.

America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!

After 30 days your power will be cut off. Your liberal illegal alien loving asses can fry this summer when your air conditioners are not working.

This don't look good.

Guys, when you get into a pissin match with your whole western border, it really aint good.
I know, Kali is asking for it but if AZ pulls the plug the FERC ( Federal Energy Regulatory Commission ) will go ape shit! Department of "Homeland" Security (the fucking irony of the topic of homeland and the reason LA is boycotting AZ ) will declare a crisis and martial law will ensue. Where do Utah and NM stand on the issue? I'm guessing check points on all borders except the one that started this shit!!!
What do you think?

Los Angeles actually owns around 20 (or so) percent of the generating facility in Arizona. They do not have the legal ability to just pull the plug. They are calling for them to re-negociate there contracts. If Kali wants out they would let them.
