whats the diffence between a fluted barrel and a heavy barrel??
fluted means it's made out of fluffy bunny tails and rainbows and heavy means it's made out of Rosie O'Donnell's pinkie toe fat.
I'm caught up, you've slowed down. Let's go, get them points, baby!!!! Post topics faster!!!
what type of answer was that huh?
a fluted barrel has metal removed from the outside of the barrel. A heavy barrel has a larger outside diameter than standard barrel.
fluted don't heat up as fast, but are lighter so you will feel more recoil
the reason they cool off faster is because of a larger surface area. The fluted area adds room to allow the heat to radiate faster.
what they said...another point baby
Can you have a fluted barrel that didn't start as a heavy barrel before machining? Wouldn't that make the walls of a standard barrel to thin?
You could remove metal from a standard barrel, as the majority of the pressure occurs in the chamber and not in the bore, but you wouldn't be able to remove enough metal to make the weight savings worth it.
Although the fluted barrel is generally heavy, you can basically do it to just about any barrel. Just select the barrel consider all the other architecture, and lay down the cash. one thing to remember is,once the metal is gone......ding. Light barrels can also have harmonic issues that will make u nuts. Work with a good gunsmith if you are building one. The one's from the major manufacturers, dunno. People used to trash Savage until they pulled the trigger and saw where the hole appeared. They (fluted barrels) do shed some weight though. are they better than the not so heavy barrel????
