Being Civilized
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it. The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender. When I carry a gun, I don't do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I'm looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don't carry it because I'm afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn't limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act. So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. “If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in government, our country will stand in need of it's experienced Patriots to prevent it's ruin."Samuel Adams |

all my adult life, so i know what it feels like to get my ass kicked. but as i get older i can't recover anymore and it hurts a whole lot longer. THAT BEING SAID: i carry now cause i just don't wanna fight anymore but i hope i will turn and RUN before i draw down on a human being..to me the "civilized act" is to try and talk my way outta trouble or run, if that fails...i don't even wanna think about it but i'am ready

made me smile...You put it all into perspective for everyone that is confused on why a bunch of rednecks would want to carry a gun. I figure I carry for the same reason i'm in the Army...My family. I'm sure most of you feel the same way.

I joined the Army in 1962 because it never occurred to me not to. That's what a man did. That's what you did to show that you were a man now. In my family, and among our family friends, that's what you did. Maybe it was about "honor", but I never heard anybody use the term. We were Americans. Nobody used the term "patriot" either, but we all were. You knew that there was a chance that you would die, but that didn't matter. You did it. It was the right thing to do.
My father in law was a WWII vet. To his dying day he didn't have any use for anybody who was able bodied and didn't join one of the services.
