Which rifle would be the best at long range? Say 200 to 400 yards. I know .50 cal, but I don't have that kind of money. I'm still torn between 30-30 and 30-06. Or is there something better than those two? To every problem there is a solution......To every solution there is another problem. |

Reaper308
what is your target? 200-400yds really isn't that long. I like .308 at that range. Are you talking about hunting, or looking for a precision rifle?
dockit
Agree with reaper either the 308 , 8mm, or 7.62 x 54 will fill the bill.
WolvieWPAFB
OK now out of those three which one would you prefer. Lets say your target is 5" in diameter.
WolvieWPAFB
Hunting really. But I mostly target shoot. All I have right now is a single shot 22 rifle.
Reaper308
hunting what? .308 will be fine for deer, ammo is plenty available, 5 in target is fine for the caliber depending on the rifle and shooter capabilities.
WolvieWPAFB
Most likely deer and turkey. You like the 4th or 5th to say 308. So I think I'm going to go with that. Do you recomend a paticular scope for that?
Reaper308
.308 will be fine for deer... I would recommend 3 1/2" 00 for turkey.
scope: what is your budget? What kind of rifle is it going on?
WolvieWPAFB
Ha good point about the scope. Would you recomend a 308? Or should I just shop and find one that suits me. I'll have to scope shop later.
Vaquero
Hunt turkey with a round equal in velocity to a .223 with FMJ.
Hunt deer with a soft point around 80 to 90gr weight.
This is assuming you would load your own ammo.
If not, get a deer gun and hunt turkey with your rimfire.

I saw the subject title, and thought you had to wear them..Wanted to tell you they have them on sale, Isle three walmart 5 bucks for 200..
no guys thats a joke... hmm wonder what they do cost.. Remember the ad for them when they first came out.. Depends, thier not just for incontenence. That always struck me as the stupidist thing i'd ever heard.. What else could they be for.. you have to be pretty lame and lazy to use them for anything else..
ok ... we've hit a new low..sorry

For example, you could strap one on, then drive across country from Texas to Florida without having to stop and pee to mace your rival in a love triangle, especially of you were a lady astronaut and a Navy Captain (O-6). Ever think of that? Oh, wait......
Reaper308
what the hell are you rambling about? I'm lost. Did I just get a fly by over my head? Negative ghostrider, the pattern is full
greg az
Pretty funny to, but will see if anybody else gets it before explaining
Reaper308
got it... diapers for you old folk. Thank god for google. I would probably have to light myself on fire and jump off a bridge if I knew what depends were at my age. Those things look expensive... $65 for a 16 pack? I think I'll just shit myself
runawaygun762
.30-30 is a brush gun, plain and simple. If you're talking hunting, don't even bother with a shot over 200 yds with a .30-30. Will it hit? It might, but getting a clean, ethical kill at anything over 200 yds with a .30-30 is largely a matter of luck.
tallguy007
What are you shooting at? 3006 is always good will do the job and more plus you can get a rifle for a few $100's but not top line.
WolvieWPAFB
To all of you that replied and gave your advice thank you. I'm looking into the 308 not sure which brand.
A special thank you to the old farts and thier diaper stories. I would advise on some rash cream as well. Especially if your going to be doing alot of driving and "NO" potty breaks.
Thanks again all,
Chris
