Best AR Mags?
My Father In-Law just got a new DPMS AR........His birthday is coming up, so I thought I'd get him a couple of Mags. What are the best Mags to get, and where should I buy them from? "Two flags fly above my land that really sum up how I feel. One is the colors that fly high and proud the red the white the blue. The other ones got a rattlesnake with a simple statement made, Don’t Tread On Me is what it says" |

The 30 round Magpul mags. They offer them in a few different colors and options. The run through my DPMS and my buddies LMT awesome. The best prices I have found on them are through Aim Surplus.

I own and use Marine Corp issue mags...they work fine for me. No clue who they are made by though.

Tapco makes a really good polymer mag. I bought a couple for my AK and they work great. Do a serch on Nextag and it will come up with a list of places that sell them and the price. Check this one out....SexyWeapon.com they have 30 round mags for the AR for $12 each. Make you father-in-law happy. He's a good one to have on your side.

I think I'am gonna go that route......Should I get Ranger Plates for them, or is that just a waste of money? Thanks for the info guys!

It limits the types of mag pouches you can use. If you want pull loops, go with the rubber mag pulls.
I agree with P mags being the best out there. Issue mags work fine too, as long as they have the green followers, and then you can just make a 550 cord loop that goes around the base plate for pull loops.

+1 for PMAGs. We've run mags from Colt, NHMTG, Brownells, and Bushmaster and the PMAG works as well as or better than all of them.....plus they are inexpensive compared to some other brands (like Colt!).
I ran a 30rd PMAG for about a year when they first came out, gave it to a co-worker who still uses it. We issue a lot of the 20rd PMAGs since they can more easily be carried in a pants pocket, shirt pocket, belt pouch, etc.
We have been unable to break one in normal usage, and have even done things to them that dented or split aluminum/steel mags (running over them with our cars, etc.).

I like GI mags but they have to have the Pmag style followers with the anti tilt/ self leveling follower. I think the metal GI mags lips last longer. The Pmags are great mags too, they are just as good as any oithers. especially now if you get the ones that have the dust cover on them allow you to keep them stored at full capacity if you want to. As far as GI mags, the bushmaster ones are nice, thats what I like, and also GI mags with stainless steel / self leveling followers have worked great for me too. Basically just make sure you have the self leveling/ anti tilt follower and it doesnt matter which ones you get.

For those of you that have to have the Ranger Plates for your PMAGS, check out page 34 in the catalog of Crye Precision. I got to play with these at SHOT Show and they are good quality. I hope Runaway or some other active or retired guy can comment on the functionality based on the picture, but from the demo and the hands on, they were solid. You do not need to have any special mag pouches to employ this system.

It's one I wouldn't use down range, but as a LEO or competitor where I don't really have to worry about going prone, I'd probably try this. I might order a couple and see how I like 'em. Gotta love Crye Precision. I'm happy to see the army finally issuing Multi Cam instead of this ARPAT shit that only blends in with a gravel parking lot. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though Multi Cam will become the army-wide uniform pattern any time soon.

Good call runaway, I did not think about the prone aspect, and that is a very prominent firing position. I did not like that you had to have a wrench to attach them to the magazines. So once installed, you could not easily "change-out" in the field.
Still, I would use them if I had a rig that supported it. I do not think the clip inside the belt would be very comfortable.

I have used many different mags over the years in various AR platform rifles and the standard issue GI with the green followers were always my favorite. However that was before the Magpul PMAGs. These are affordable, rugged, sturdy, and reliable. My favorite feature is the cover over the end that takes pressure off of a loaded mag to keep from bending the lips at the top of the mag. Well worth the money!

same here - I always used the standard issue with green followers until I discovered PMags - now I only use them.
