What is ur opinion of the best combat rifle of all time? Or if u cant narrow it down the top 10 of all time(they had to have been used in actual combat). "Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death." — Gen. Omar Bradley

As much as I like the Garand, I guess I'd have to say the HK91 or G3 rates as at least in the top 5 Battle Rifles. The FAL is also in the running because of similarities. Because a rifle is cheap or easy to make (ie the AK) does not make it the best. Because of politics and the usual military garbage, huge numbers (ie the M16) also does not make a great rifle. This just an observation of mine, and I maybe full of it but, it is just that....My Opinion.

I believe the best combat rifle is the one you have been trained in and are proficient with. Of course you also have to have it with you at the time of need. Weapons are weapons, they all pretty much function the same way and have for quite some time.
You may have the M41 Space Marine assault rifle from Aliens, but if it is on the nightstand at your house and you are in Nakatomi Plaza, it does nothing for you.

Clint; Where can I get an M41? I could meet them at the Gulf Breeze, FL UFO center, if they have a scheduled trip there.

The best combat rifle is the one you have with you.
I am an old combat infantryman serving in Vietnam with the Americal Division. I believe you would never go wrong with an M-16 or it's variants regardless of the bad press. It's been in service 40 years and would be my first pick.

would be my russian sks.it is always with me,in the trunk of my car,on the gun rack of my truck,or above my bed at home,i even mounted a gun rack (the kind that they mount in hummers)on the side of my toolbox.fortunately my employer is gun friendly!he just tells me to not shoot the Snap On Tool dealer!(fuckin' schister!)
mr.rogers
I personally like the m-1, but for me I think I'd say the 6.5 grennal on the ar 15, from what i can see the bollistics are good, just difficult to load, from what i hear. The jury's not in yet. Of course I'd have to agree wtih hurl about what your effective with.
greasypaws
what is the issue with it?i have heard of this round,i may build a gun for it but wanna let others play with it first cause it is so new.what kinda pressure levels does this cartridge operate at?
mr.rogers
The round is great, just making it work for the ar 15 platform flawlessly is the challenge. They have misfeed issues, the difficulty with the loading is keeping the your pressure even. As you know the ar was'nt originally designed for larger cal. The army's idea is to bring out the 6.8 spc, the grennal is faster than the 6.8, roughly 3000 fps compared to 2900fps.

What do you all think about the M468 or REC from Barrett?
Nutty Basterd
I'd say for the assault the AK-47 for distance I'd have to go with the Remington M1879 45-70, it's bolt action and clip fed sighted for 1200 yds but supposedly can be accurate to 3500 yds with a 500 grain bullet.

DPMS PANTHER .308
I had to mention this rifle when you asked about the Barrett REC7, and asked if they would make one in .308NATO. I also mention it because DPMS is just a few miles from me and they seem to be a really top notched operation. I have this rifle on my wish list and I think it is a little overlooked.
neody_redneck
i'll just stay with my hk416 and 417 for the assault and range capabilities.
Death from Above
The best combat weapon by far is the A2. Because it is can reach out and touch you.
Reaper308
if I could chose my own primary weapon, i would want something in 7.62, like the scar H etc... the FAL and G3 have proven to be a donimate rifles... i would just want something a little more updated and lighter. no one can argue the range and punch that the round packs, the only downsides are mag capacity, load weight, and muzzel rise when on FA. as long as you stick to burst, you should be fine
tedpo
The S.A.W is the best that the is. Hand down
Reaper308
yeah, for cover fire... but if you could only choose one rifle, would you really want to lug that thing around?
tedpo
True it is a pain going on a road march and paking one.You are worthless after. I would have to say stay with what works M-16
ssdd71
I'm with Reaper, I'd take a HK G3.
skeeter51
The HK91, FAL, AK47, AR15, and M1 are all great rifles but if I had to choose one it would be the HK91.
ssdd71
My vote is for HK-G3.
skeeter51
Can civilians purchase a G3?
ssdd71
They can own the SemiAuto version of the G3.
skeeter51
Where do you find one of those and how much do they usually go for?
ssdd71
I believe Century Arms was selling some awhile back. They probably have Cetme or FAL left. You will need a dealer or an FFL.
skeeter51
I won't have a problem finding a dealer. Just the gun. Thanks for the info.
ssdd71
Federal Arms used to sell a G-3 built on a new US made receiver, but they recently went out of business. I don't know who ended up with there inventory or where you can find them...
Pkato
the M-16 which I got to use against some Colombian FARC back in 1996-1997, so I would have to go with that. However, if I was going into combat today and was given the choice I am not sure I would choose anything over the Automatic Shotgun I saw on Future Weapons! I love that thing..of course, maybe not the best choice but I just think it's cool, so I stick with the M-16.

I can appreciate your loyalty to your M-16, and I can appreciate it as a fine firearm, but it is excellent for purposes within reason. That is why my choice is for something in .308. It will reach well beyond anything possible for a 5.56 and do so with authority. It will also do anything you could possibly ask of a 5.56 without compromise.
FutureSEAL
Would have t go with the M1 garand. Won WWII if you ask me.
Clarkey
I would agree the rifle you know best and for me that's either the SLR (Brit version of FAL) or the SA80 and I would say the SA80 edges out the SLR for me, now the problems have been ironed out it's a really reliable rifle and deadly accurate. I've used it in some shitty enviroments like the jungles of Belize and it never jammed I grew to really like this gun despite some oposition to it at first, barrel length is retained due to it being a bullpup design so muzzle velocity and accuracy are high in a relatively short rifle.
It's draw backs are it's weight and a bit of a twat to fire if your left handed.
7.62 has the power over the .556 but have you tried hitting a man running past 300 yards with an iron sighted 7.62 like the SLR (FAL) the foresight blade is thicker than the target where as the SA80 has the SUSAT optical sight fitted and is good out to 600yards and with no recoil you don't have to adjust after each shot just give it more lead and drop him. You can also carry more ammo with a .556 essential if your out for days on a fighting patrol with no hope of a replen.(My opinion only based on experiences with 7.62 and .556 caliber rifles)
