Hello, I want to know if anyone has any specific gun suggestions for me.

I have really bad eye sight from my right eye, but exceptionally good eye sight from my left eye. I am also right handed. When I first started shooting pistols a two years ago I didn't have any trouble, but recently I started shooting other types of firearms such as shotguns and rifles.

I have forced my self to shoot an AR-15, AK-47, Remington 870 left handed for over a week straight and I just could not get over the awkwardness of shooting left handed.

I am completely unable to shoot the AK-47 or AR-15 right handed using my left eye because my left eye wont reach far enough for me to see the iron sight, however with the 870 because of the shape of the stock I am easily capable of using my left eye while holding it right handed.

So I am wondering if anyone here has experience with this or can suggest a few guns I could try (shotguns, SMGs, rifles) using right handed while aiming with my left eye?

I haven't run into one yet that can't be shot left eye dominate.

It all just comes down to time and practice. If you have to, put a red-dot sight on your rifle and keep both eyes open.

Fall back to the basics...

lefty...

I have tried this specifically. the closest I have come is to do off-hand training. Such as if right arm was wounded... have practiced with both minimal help from right, and with right compleatly absent. This was both shooting and reloading. I also made my team train doing it.

Solved the situation in several ways. First I started intentionally doing everything with both hands. Eating brushing teeth anything. Now I can write with either hand as well. Never hurts to be able to shoot with your off hand. Now I don't have an off hand. Also when I shoot left handed I just center the handgun and shoot with both eyes open. Works fine as you already know. The practice mentioned above is correct. Now I shoot with both hands every single time I go to the range. Ij also have shooting video games and shoot a lot of airguns.. eventually you will be more comfortable although I think the pistol came much easier then the long gun. For awhile I did everything with pistol. It was really easy and there isn't much you can do with a pistol. I shoot the bow right handed too.

I have tried using both eyes with all my guns and didn't notice a difference in one being more "friendly" o the opposite eye shooting...Don't think it really matters.

I am also left handed but right-eye dominant. I didn't find out until a few years ago. When I was young, I only shot long guns, and it didn't seem to make a difference. I found out I was right-eye dominant after getting a pistol and realizing that many times, but not always, I would hold it left handed, but aim w/ my right eye. I am still trying to get used to holding a gun right handed. But I've gotten better. I my shot placement has too. It's not really the same as your situation though since your vision in one eye is not as good. Both my eyes have good vision (last I checked, they were 20/17), but I just tend to focus with my right and the left goes with it. I have noticed that I am shooting better now. I think that has to do with more attentiveness b/c I am more conscience of what I am doing.
That's a long-winded way of saying, I think you should continue working on holding the gun left-handed. It is weird at first and it does take a while, but you will start getting used to it. I have also read articles about keeping both eyes open, and have tried that. It is also hard to break the old habit of closing one eye, but I have noticed better shots when I do keep both open. Again, this could just be a placebo effect and it's better only because I am thinking of it more.

I feel your pain. My man. Also. The both eye open will allow the stronger eye to focus and will be the Poa with pistols but with a bow and I think long gun with or without scope..with your bad eye you should probably change hands. You should be OK with most shooting positions with a pistol. With both eyes open and using your stronghand. I know....no longer in Vogue. Wording. . Good. Luck

eye dominance

ISD got it; a red dot sight will help immensely. I dislike lasers, but a laser sight might also be of benefit. On some long guns, a properly set up forward-mounted (scout) scope can also work.

I started out shooting lefthand long gun, one eye open, lefthand pistol, one eye open.
Now I shoot long guns lefthand, both eyes open, pistol righthand both eyes open. I'm all kinds of effed-up!

Another suggestion is to wear eyepro, and place a strip of tape over the right eye. Keep both eyes open and this can help to eventually train your brain to get the 'better' eye dominant. It worked for me.

Lastly, many carbines and rifles (M4 for instance) can be readily fired with the stock more towards the center of the chest and less on the outboard shoulder. I've also had to cant rifles to avoid faceshields, gas masks, mics, etc., and that might help you get your eyes to the sights.

My son suffers from this. He's right handed and left eyed. So obviously I did some research on how best to address it. Two schools of thought. 1) Learn to shoot with your off hand. 2) Patch your dominant eye, over time forcing the non dominant eye to be more dominant.

When I was in the military, they patched a guys eye if he was cross dominant. I offered my son his choice, and he chose learning to shoot offhand. Obviously YMMV

Thanks!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I'll try shooting left handed a bit more. I'll also try shooting offhand as I have never tried it before. I'll also consider trying a red dot sight and seeing if that works while I hold a gun right handed.

I am considering one day getting an SMG due to their low weight and recoil compared to rifles.
Any suggestions on SMGs that go well with red dot sights?

Change your technique

The list of friggin' machine guns that piss off lefties is legion, but who wants to lug those beasts 'round anyway - my natural is left - but extra to the good tips above for Brazuca I strongly recommend you also look into adopting the pistol stance and mentality taught in the IDF, especially to my buddies in the Israeli special ops!
Basically it's "Don't aim, point!".
Yeah yeah, I know. You reckon it's the same as everybody else at your firing range in the States or here... but it ain't. Anyway, look into it 'coz I suspect it might help you Brazuca with your problem.
