I think it would depend on what you're trying to accomplish with it. What do you plan on using it for?

Answer.....sorta

An 8 guage if you're going after big game.
10-12 guage for medium.
Anything after that is small game.

And that guy who said get a rifled barrel is spot on.

There is a 4 guage.

There is a 4 guage too. That is the biggest you can go.

look ... it all depends upon metal. right....wht use do u have, hunting, combat or home security???? well whatever ur use is i will suggest through all of my experience in Army that u should purchase one that can shoot a high strenth cartridges like sg and lg and its barrel should not b heating up ... many chinese shotguns r available with good material and finish but m very sorry to say that they r poor in performance and accuracy......all of my life i have been using Daudsons Armoury's 'SHOOTER'.... ITS GREAT,TUFF,DURABLE,ACCURATE and made up of highly specified materials like 4140 grade alloy steel.... it is not easily available but u kindly visit www.daudsons.org.....

I have used many shotguns in my limited lifetime, but nothing quite says "hi how ya" doing like the Benelli m4. Put a red dot on it and you can go after humans..i mean deer just fine, yeah deer, that's what I meant...
