ok, not being an asshole right now because this is serious. Look at your wife and child and think... what would a 22 do to a 200lb asshole who just came into your house?
It would piss him off more than anything.
Please get your wife a .410 pump or a .357 mag for the wife, please for your baby girl's sake.
First there should be an alarm system; go to www.x10.com to get one. they are cheap, but effective and you don't have to pay for monitoring since you can have it call you if it is ever set off, and you can listen in on what is going on at home to make a decision to call police.
with that out of the way, the alarm will awake the wife to get the shotgun or pistol.
These days it takes a lot more than a bang to get rid of an intruder. You need a BOOM or 2.
In this order clewiss...REPEAT AFTER ME:
ALARM, SHOTGUN AND .357 (.357 you are saying? Yes, because she can shoot a light load of a .38 out of it and have better control)

Gun Control= the theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

Heyas Joeybaggadonuts, welcome to the forum. My wife died about 8 years ago and I am raising two teenage boys one of whom is slightly handicapped with CP and has a learning disability. He is very open and loving and trusting of everyone. I would do anything to protect my boys. I have never remarried, so I have to be both father and mother to the boys. I am retired corporate security Captain and Trainer and martial arts teacher. If anyone unwelcome and dangerous were to come into my house, I would do anything to protect my boys and I have the right tools (firearms) to protect my home and my boys. Pleasure to meet you and welcome to the forum.

Your new friend,

Koji

.22

a walther p22 or sig mosquito... but if its for pertection, I would consider something atleast .380 or 9mm. Most women can handle a .380 or 9mm fine in a larger frame... If it were my wife, I would feel better knowing that she had a round that will drop an intruder. That said, any gun is better than no gun.

on a tight buget

if you are new to handguns and on a very tight buget you can pick up a nice used s&w mod 10 38cal for under 200$ loaded with mag safe or another frangable ammo.the s&w model 10 is very reliable and frangable ammo wont over penatrate

I agree to a point

A 20 gauge shotgun is better than a 410 for the power, yet is easily controlled by even the most slightly-built people. As for handguns, .357 is good, but autos with short trigger pulls (Here's my Glock or XD recommendation) fit a wider variety of hands than .357 wheel guns with their heavier trigger pulls. Heavier pulls equal jerked guns and missed shots.
