Colt Peace Maker

They are expensive and ammo is not that expensive (about $30 per box of fifty)
You may want to look at a Ruger in .45 Long colt. Much cheaper.

As far as purchase you should go to your local gun shops and look around.

Well, you have very good taste. I would get a book written by John Taffin called Big Bore Sixguns.he covers the pistols, loads, holsters, custom work, and history. Plus he covers different manufacturers of the pistols, past and present. It will give you a good idea of how to match your needs with the right pistol. Colts are expensive and are the real deal, but for some puposes they may not be the best choice. Ruger Vaquero models are probably the best deal for most people. But there are some really nice clones too. There are also more modern design single action pistols such as the Freedom arms 97, that are exceptional. However, for some, only a Colt will do. They are beautiful creations. They hold their value and you will be holding not only a Colt but also a piece of American history. The book has some fantastic pictures of some of Taffins Colts.. very nice.. I think his book will help you make a decision that you will be happy with. Good luck
