Greetings fellow firearm enthusiasts,

I am leaving for an elk hunting trip in october. There is the possibility of elk being at ranges up to 1000 yards. I do not have a range or a place that is near with that distance to shoot, but even if I did, the question is still valid. Should I concern myself with the coriolis effect?
I have competed .22 rifle and .22 pistol so I understand the basics of shooting, but I am ignorant of ranges past 200 yards. Any information presented would be greatly appreciated. I am using a .300 Win Mag with 168 grain Barnes boat tail bullets. I need to check the velocity, but if memory serves me correctly it was around 2600 fps.
We have hunted in the same area for 15 years, and we see elk at those ranges and we will shoot at them, but mostly just scare them. I wish to take additional knowledge with me this year to make the 1000 yard shot viable for kill.

thank you
clint

an elk is going to be a pretty big target...saying that, you still have to be on target for a humane kill. I have been told that 1000m is when you want to start looking at the coriolis effect. as you probably know, the coriolis force will make objects veer to the right in the northern hemisphere, and the left in the southern hemisphere. the free flowing objects will veer more off course the farther you get from the equator.
my honest opinion is that it won't effect the shot too much at 1000yds. you are gonna have pretty good velocity with a .300 win mag, so I would just account for windage and dropage and work on some breathing techniques so you can get a steady shot off.

wouldn't chance wounding an animal at the ranges talked about above(1000 yds).it is called hunting not sniping.most game bullets such as the barnes arent designed to open properly at the lower velocities caused by the longer range.i think the least of your worries are the coriolis effect.not to mention if you cant close the distance to something more reasonable and humane maybe fishing would be a better hobby for ya!

I'm with greasy, you want to make sure you can humanely kill the animal in one shot no matter what.

FUCK THAT, I dont hunt at all but have no problem with the killing of anything...even humans. However I got to say that if you got a rifle that I could tag a target with at 1,000Yds, imma do that. I am not Snake and am no "expert" in sniping, but if I get the chance to take something down at that distance, FUCKING A!!! AT&T-reach out at touch somebody!! Now I got to say, I would not go about it with a bitch rifle and have some animal limping away, if I had a rifle I could get the kill with, then its over. Grease...I got to say, I am suprised in you. Just cuz you could possibly miss the shot you wouldn't do it? Only take 100M shots huh? Thats like playing NES Duck Hunt with the laser gun against the screen. No skill. I say go for it!!

Reaper,
thank you for the information. I have read Major Plaskers book, but book knowledge is different than real world knowledge. We have killed many elk at 800 yards with one shot. We know what we are doing at that range. Add 200 yards and there are more variables. We hunt at 10,000ft. We kill elk where we see them. We do not shoot intentionally to wound. I can not tell the elk where to go, that is why it is called hunting and not sniping.
Greasy, my father is a rep for Barnes and we have not had any problems with expansion at those ranges. In fact my cousin's son killed an elk last year at 500 yards with a 6mm. It is where you place the bullet. I think it is hypocritical for a hunter to tell someone they do not know or they do not know how they hunt that they shouldn't do something. Greasy, I know you were not attacking me for taking the shot. Maybe my explanation should have included the consitant 800 yard shots.

about the long range shooting with you pops being a rep he knows the design limitations with these bullets.as for sytasyn killing elk is a whole lot different than knockin over hajis at 800-1000yds.i do consistently harvest animals at distances well over 100 yards.my furthest shot to date was a mule deer that range finded at 617yds.lucky for me i had 4.5-12x50 scope on my .308 remington 760.with so many yahoos in the woods hunting and trying difficult shots at long distances when you run across someone talking about it,you tend to wanna tell people not to try it.i have found enough dead animals that were wounded and got away,so i would hope that unless you have lots of experience with long range shots just get closer

hey.. if you are consistantly on target at 800 yds, I say go for it. as I said above, I don't think the coriolis effect will come into play.

In physics, the Coriolis effect is an apparent deflection of moving objects when they are viewed from a rotating frame of reference.

The effect is named after Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis, a French scientist who described it in 1835, though the mathematics appeared in the tidal equations of Pierre-Simon Laplace in 1778. The Coriolis effect is caused by the Coriolis force, which appears in the equation of motion of an object in a rotating frame of reference. The Coriolis force is an example of a fictitious force (or pseudo force), because it does not appear when the motion is expressed in an inertial frame of reference, in which the motion of an object is explained by the real impressed forces, together with inertia. In a rotating frame, the Coriolis force, which depends on the velocity of the moving object, and centrifugal force, which does not depend on the velocity of the moving object, are needed in the equation to correctly describe the motion.

Perhaps the most commonly encountered rotating reference frame is the Earth. Freely moving objects on the surface of the Earth experience a Coriolis force, and appear to veer to the right in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in the southern. Movements of air in the atmosphere and water in the ocean are notable examples of this behavior: rather than flowing directly from areas of high pressure to low pressure, as they would on a non-rotating planet, winds and currents tend to flow to the right of this direction north of the equator, and to the left of this direction south of the equator. This effect is responsible for the rotation of large cyclones (see Coriolis effects in meteorology).

I have buddy on the big island. He invited me to go pig hunting with him one day. They had 3 ATVs, 4 point dogs and 6 pit bulls. His son was 17 at the time and was the killer. No guns allowed, all knives.
The hunt was structured as such:
We rode the ATVs up to the sugar cane fields, the sugar cane was about 10 feet tall. You could see the tunnels that pigs ran through in the cane. The point dogs would be in front of the ATVs, the pitbulls behind.
When the pointers found a trail, the pit bulls would haul ass after the pig. They would distract the pig until the humans got there. One guy would grab the pig back legs and flip it over. While the pig was in the air rolling towards its back, the killer would jump onto the chest of the pig and run his knife across the pigs throat. The pit bulls were still attacking the pig at this point. Once the pig died, the pit bulls would go back to their master and we would start all over again. Next time I visit, he told me I would have the knife. Looking forward to it. The pigs were 200-250 lbs and 3-4 inch teeth.
