correct cartridge for a WW2 98 mauser
I was asked by my friend if I could figure out what cartridge the 98 mauser that he had just inherited used. I always like a little challenge now and again, so I said sure. So I brought it home. It appears to have an 8mm barrel, but a 8x57mm cartridge will not chamber. It seems that the case is too big in diameter. On top of the barrel is stamped "Bohler". After removing the stock, I found a crown over a B, beside that was a crown over a C, and under that was a crown over a U. Below that was "7.6mm. I have looked on the web, but could find nothing. I am hoping someone out there may be able to shed some light on this problem. |

some have been redone to take 308 cal best bet is to take it to a gun smith, try out try a few different cal rounds if there is a metal hole in the but stock the I was told by my dad that u put a round in it to see if it fit if it did u can shot it, DO NOT DO THIS as not sure if it is true for now as in battle good luck welcome to GUNS LOT

The K98 is a 8mm historically.

you should have him check out these sites, with rifle in hand so they can compare...
Or let you do it for them...

if its all original then it shoots 7.92x57mm. Welcome to gunslot.

..
Though, the 7.6 mm very well could indicate rechambering....

I have seen them re-chambered to 7.62 as well.

Thanks for getting rid of stocking stuffers, and tell me something Iknw is stupid to ask, but you are the best, what the hell is the difference between the shell of 44magnum and 44-40 ? When Henry made me my 44 I asked anthony to get me as close to a 44-40 as he can, so he gives me beautiful 44 mag and on other side says special, and serial # JC001, and large loop like rifleman and stock from borneo etc, fist off line and all. But then says best I can do without patent infringement John ? Now what ? JOhn

I appreciate the comments. I have also now tried the 30-06, 308,and even a7.62x39,nothing seems to chamber. It may be time for that gun smith.

Are you sure it was 7.6? Maybe it is a Mauser that was sporterized to the Swiss 7.5mm. Try to find some of this, if you can and see if it chambers.

this is about the only problem mausers have.some of them are not marked, and some are marked, but have been changed without remarking ive heard.have fun with this.hope its not a crazy wildcat chamber.the only 7.6mm mauser ammo i found info about was for a pistol.

Yeah, I don't know of and couldn't find any 7.6 ammo that would used in a Mauser (other than the pistol). That's why I am wondering if he misread it and it was actually 7.5 Swiss. Many Mausers were sporterized with this round.

Did you ever get it figured out?
