Well,as some of you know,i got laid off last Monday. As an automotive, diesel and heavy equipment mechanic for the last 15 years,(with the resume to back it!)you wouldn't think that a blue collar guy like me would have a problem finding a job.Guess what?,there isn't any jobs available!.Most of you know what the economy looks like as well as i do.I live 80 miles south of Seattle in the State of Washington,so it is not like i live in Po-Dunk,Montana or something.I have been searching the newspaper ads and internet job sites to no avail.I have even had some suggestions from fellow Gunslotter's(thanks guys!)as to where some work is.
I am sitting here looking online tonight when i received a phone call. The caller was my dad.Obviously,he knew about my situation because we speak almost daily. My dad is a mechanic also, but only after going to school after losing his job at an aluminum foundry due to overseas competition.Fortunately for him, there is a law that says when you lose your job for this reason the federal government will pay for job training.Upon losing his job he took Automotive Technology, learning how to work on newer vehicles.Upon his completion of this community college course,i assisted him in getting a job working for a military contractor i used to work for.
Growing up,dad always bought, fixed up and sold cars and trucks. He had a particular interest in 1965 to 1970 Pontiac GTO's and 1963 to 1966 Chevy Nova's.At one time in the late 90's he had a collection of 63 different Nova's and GTO's.when the muscle car market was going ape shit he started to sell. With a collection of cars and parts like this,he did quite well for a small number of years.
Anyhoo, during our phone call tonight,he proceeded to tell me he had gone out and purchased 6 cars and a pickup.Dad wanted to know if i was interested in working for him on his new vehicles,i of course said yes!.
I will be cleaning out and setting up his 24x48 shop in any way that fits me.For doing this he will be paying me an hourly wage and i can use the shop to work on jobs that i pick up here and there. This comes as a relief for me because unemployment doesn't pay diddly and with four children, times are getting tough real quick!.
The point here is"has your dad done anything cool like this for you?"tell us about it!

I Salute my Dad for helping me when i am in a tough spot like this!

Well, first off I lost my Dad last year so remembering the thing he showed me and helped me out are all I have of him now. For 2 summer's before I joined the Marine's Dad got me a job at his factory for summer help. My Dad was alway there for me when I needed someone to talk to and help me. The only thing Dad could not help me with was about my military time because he could not serve because of a bad back problem he found out later he had. Dad had to retire at 42 because of health reason and I retired a 26 because of military injury. So, on that part of my live we had a lot of things we understand about each other. I know I miss not getting to talk to him, but I am very thankful for all he showed me when he was living.

Hurricane Ike just whooped us like Tina and I am just getting back on my feet but its tough. My dad is here for me and my family. I thank God for him and he is one of the most caring people you could ever meet.

It is curious that physical courage should be so common in the world and moral courage so rare.- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

I'm sick of the government allowing unfair competition with our jobs. The feds dont care about us. Sorry about your job......pisses me off. We can not compete with socialsist nations such as EU, chinese, russian and mexico. These countries subsidise industries which allow the companies to send products here at below their cost. They have some aspects of capitolism, but give their industry reimbersments for losses. This puts our industry (whats left of it) in a undefendable position.........Our politicians worry about human rights...what about our human rights? we need to work.
Sorry about your job...glad to see your pressing on.
