Deer Hunting Rifle with scope
I'm in the market for a 'deer' hunting rifle with a scope, something one would use in the woods. I like bolt action rifles, but am not averse to lever action. I'm thinking in the 30-06 range. Do you guys have a preference, or are there issues to consider before jumping on one? Thanks for any help. I would go with a 30.06 for sure, there are a ton of different load variations you can use. You can also in a pinch shoot long distances if you had to. Lever action are ok, but you will not get the same performance at long ranges as the 30.06. I prefer Ruger rifles, they are a working mans gun rugged reliable performance. I hunt deer with a .338 Win. Mag., but I like the recoil and the knock down power.

I have owned a 30.06 before and took some deer with it. It is a good all aroung gun and like hilbilly77 says, you cant beat it for load variety. My preference though is for flat, fast shooting mags like the 7mm rem mag or the 300 win mag. Alot of guys i know up here shoot 243 winchester for deer and swear by them. My wife and one of my brothers love their 25.06. 300 Weatherby is also a great round in my humble opinion. Whatever you end up buying dont cheap out on optics.

this is complicated. i've shot deer with a lot of different guns and bows. my 2 favorites; marlin 336 lever in .35 rem with a 2.5 power scope (hunting brush or walking) tikka t-3 lite in .308 leopold fixed 6 power. any .30 cal. is good for most places. the .243 and 25-06 shoot flat. there are many things to consider. my advice: you got to start someplace so buy something and start shooting.

.30-06 is a great round. Don't fall into the hype of the belted magnums or the Weatherby rounds. The -06 has killed millions of deer, and will continue to do so. It seems like a cheapo route, but don't overlook the Savage rifle and scope package deals at Wal-Mart. Some would have you believe you need a thousand dollar illuminated mil-dot reticle laser rangefinding special forces scope for deer. Bullshit.

I personally use a winchester in this caliber. I have shot many deer with it everywhere from brush to around 200 yards. I recomend at least a 9-power wide angle scope. Personally i think they are excellent for med- lrg game most anything between africa and canada. I would definatly want a magnum caliber for brown bear, moose,(dangerous game)But getting away from topic.....I would definatly recomend the 06!
