hi everyone my name is jason and im new to this site. I live in texas and have been bow hunting for deer and hog. I just recently got a winchester model 70 30-06 any opinons on this gun for that purpose or is it a little to much rifle.I eat my kills and do not want to make hamburger meat out of it. Any reply and opinion would be greatly appreciated . THANKS |

.30-06 with careful placement and good bullets will kill any animal on North America, but isn't overkill for deer or hog. It's a bit big for Javelina, but wild hog won't be messed up unless you're going after piglet.

the 30-06 is a good hunting rifle, I know a couple of people that use one. the only thing I’ve noticed is its heavy to carry long distances. Like runawaygun said, just gotta be carful with the placement of the shot.
O ya welcome to the sight.

I think you should go forward and use it on any animal you select (except the "Big" bears). Ammunition selection is mind numbing, everything you could possibly want. I believe it is also the #1 reloading rifle cartridge,
to hunt with. For the "Big Bears", I would make a larger caliber selection.

I agree the '06 isn't the best choice for Kodiak Brown bears or Polar bears. It will do the job using 220 gr SP with good bullet placement, though. Not the best choice, but still valid.
