Monarch's are nice for the price, bought binos last year and now plan on buying a couple of their scopes. I have one leupold VariX II 3-9x but having looked at the Monarch I like them better. Watch for them on ebay you might be able to get a pretty good deal, 2.5-10X42mm is a good bet for deer.

for hunting i like alot of scopes depending on the terain your goign to be hunting in and how much money you wanna throw away. i have shot and killed dear with a cheap ass 3 to 9 tasco so alot depends on yourself as a shooter and then the terain
Don't tread on me. I bring a rocket launcher to a gunfight.
i like the vari x series, but if i am gonna hunt rough terrain i switch to a 3-9 tasco,so if i fall and break the scope it is cheap to replace.as far a magnification i like a fixed 4 power, but most scopes are 3-9,if you have poor eyes a 6 power is nice too.i have a 6.5-20x50 that is sweet cause at 100 yards it is useable but for long range it is awesome

I personally like my bushnell tactical, it's powerful but versatile, only limited by it's user. Not to mention that it can take a hit and still be on it's mark.

There is a nice article on scopes in this months Guns & Ammo. Van Zwool doesnt mention some of my favorites but he does cover the topic very well. I have included the link.
Bushnell scopes are also good for the money. They have fixed powers with cicle x reticle and variables too. Very affordable and durable too. check em" out!
I like the Leopold's and I hava a Simmon on my AR right now. I would go with what you can afford and what you like. Can't go wrong that way.

I have had good luck with several scopes from BSA. I have a Mil-dot unit on my G3 and find it adequate.

I find a fixed scope is best something like a 7x50, I currently use a meopta for stalking deer.
