This year I'm going to try something different, I'm going to use my AR. I did some homework and found some ammo made just for deer hunting with an MSR. Now I've always thought that the .223 was light for deer, but I think that I can do it just fine. Now a couple of reasons for this are, I want to do it and the place I'll be hunting is all shots under 20 yards. The spot is surrounded by dense brush and has a clear trail the deer have been using. So the way I see it, the range is so close that the 7mm mag and .30-06 will just blow right through. I have a .30-30 that I could use but just want to try it with the AR. I got 2 different loads to use but I'm leaning towards the Remington hypersonic in .62 grain. Has anyone else used an AR to hunt deer and what issues did you have? If you think I'm crazy, ok. I would just like to have a good old talk about guns for a change. So I would say any discussion about deer hunting and what your using would be fair game. If I remember right, max should have a nice BDL .270, how's it shooting?

Deer Season

It is still bow season here, I leave for PA the Saturday after Thanksgiving, will be at my family's hunting camp in Sullivan County. It is mostly mountains and forest, there is some denser areas, I use my 30-30 there, and took a nice 8 pointer first day last year. It would be a hard thing for me to use a .223, I know they have .308 etc. in use on AR platforms. I believe in the big bullet/big deer theory. My only other rifle until the .270 was the 300 Win Mag, which is really too big for deer. I got the .270 zeroed in, bought a fancy scope and can't wait to go hunting. The week after PA is NJ deer season, I hunt all week then as well. The only problem in NJ is we have to use shotguns. Where will you be hunting Coppertop?

Missouri is where I hunt. I've been wanting a .308 AR to go hunting but I haven't been able to make that happen yet. However, these new rounds by Remington and federal are supposed to be the bomb. What the hell right.

Deer Hunting

Do you hunt near your home or go to a hunting camp? When I hunt in NJ I hunt near my house, the family camp in PA is a 4 hour ride, with me driving, 5 if my dad drives, lol.

Hunting

Went last Saturday with my 15 yr. old daughter. She used an H&R single shot 20 gauge. I used my 44 magnum Ruger Blackhawk. We were in bad weather in Minnesota, 30 mph wind and 23degrees. Ice and snow in our face all day.

Finally at 4:30 pm I saw two does moving towards her position. They spotted her and took off running, she got off two shots, missed them both. I took her to the sporting goods store later and bought her a new hunting outfit. What a trooper.

As far as hunting with a .223 caliber I have 12 kills on Wisconsin deer with a Ruger mini-14. That caliber has proven itself to me.

The spot I'm going to this year is just a few miles from my house. It's just off of a lake and is right next to army corp of engineer land. I grew up on a 740 acre farm and could hunt all I wanted. My grandfather sold it 2 months before he died 20 years ago. Ever sense then, I've had to hunt where I could get permission. I would try to buy a few acres, but I'm trying to get a promotion at work that would require a move. You do what you got to do.

LBC, thanks for the info on the .223. Down here, the weather is looking like 40's getting up to mid to high 60's. Not good hunting weather but not much I can about that.

Yeah but

Feels great to get out there! Hunting land has really gotten to be an issue around Mn. I am fortunate to have a relative with a large farm, unfortunately if the corn is still in the fields, it is hard to get the deer to move. They will bed down in the corn field all day.

It is a problem everywhere, I have a few farms I hunt on. It gets harder and harder every year.

We've been tossing around the idea to buy hunting rights, but I've never been involved in anything like that. The best case for me would be to sell my house and buy a house on 10-20 acres. Then I could do what I want when I want.

Had three small does come by this afternoon, then a spike and two does. Still waiting for the racker I caught on my camera.

My little brother is going to talk to his old high school coach who might have a line on a place. I'm so wrapped up with work during the week, I just don't have the time to run it down. We'll have to see what shakes out. Good luck out there and get that big one.

I sometimes use a sig sauer 556 for deer hunting, not quite an A.R. but it shoots the 556/223 round and I cannot tell you enough about the hornady V max 60 grain bullet. I use it in western Nebraska on Mullies and around home (eastern Ne.) on whitetails. Great penetration, nice cavity expansion. This bullet will knock them dead at 200 yards plus. You can get ballistics at hornady website. I know I am late on this thread, but this bullet is AWSOME. How did your deer season go. Did you get one?

All I saw were does. I should have taken the shot but I had but I was going after the 8 point that was in the area. My uncle ended up getting him. I'm glad to hear that people have had luck with the .223. Growing up I would never had considered it. Still had fun getting out of the office and back into the woods.
