Hey ya'll, just joined and wanted to say Hi. I'm out in the desert in southern New Mexico by the Rio Grande. I hadn't had a gun in the house for 30 years since I got out of the Navy but figured now would probably be a good time if I ever wanted to have one again. I'm retired on a limited budget and wanted to put together a decent basic group of weapons. I did a good bit of research on the net in forums. Other than the service the only guns I had ever owned were lever guns and bolt actions the exception being a Ruger 10-22 I had as a kid. I ended up with a Hi Point C9, a Hi Point .45, Hi Point 9mm carbine, Yugo SKS, a Ruger 10-22 and a mossberg 12 gauge. I spent a little over $1200 for all of them bought over about an 8 month period. The HP carbine was the first one and it was used. Cost me $140. I was going to put a red dot on it but the thing was dead on right off the shelf and hit everything it got pointed at so I left it alone. The 9mm and the .45 I bought new and they were dead on right out of the box. I bought several thousand rounds of ammo with the bucks I saved. I got the Yugo SKS with a folding stock and scope. A friend had built it and it's a real nice long range gun. With the three 30 round mags it will shoot forever. All in all the little Ruger is the most fun. With a few Eagle 30 round mags and a cheap scope it is a lot of fun and doesn't cost a fortune. I would like an AR or an AK but the dang things have gone up so much I can't touch them now.
