Detroit police kill 7-year-old girl during home search
A stray bullet hit Aiyana Jones who later died at the hospital
The Associated Press

DETROIT — A sleeping 7-year-old girl was shot and killed when an officer's gun went off while Detroit police were searching a duplex for a suspect in the slaying of a teenager, a police official said.

Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee said at a news conference Sunday that Aiyana Jones was hit in the neck by a single bullet and died at a hospital. Police said the girl was sleeping on a couch when she was shot.

"This is any parent's worst nightmare. It also is any police officer's worst nightmare," Godbee said.

Godbee said officers with the department's Special Response Team set off a flash grenade as they entered the apartment with their guns drawn about 12:40 a.m. Sunday with a warrant to look for a suspect in the Friday slaying of a 17-year-old boy.

The lead officer encountered a 46-year-old woman immediately inside the front room of the house and "some level of physical contact" ensued during which the officer's gun went off, Godbee said. The officers had identified themselves as police, he said.

Charles Jones, Aiyana's father, told the Detroit News the woman Godbee referred to was his mother and the child's grandmother.

"They came into my house with a flash grenade and a bullet," Jones said. "They say my mother resisted them, that she tried to take an officer's gun. My mother had never been in handcuffs in her life. They killed my baby, and I want someone to tell the truth."

Jones told the Detroit Free Press that after hearing the explosive and gunshot, he rushed into the room where his daughter had been sleeping. He said police forced him to lie on the ground, with his face in his daughter's blood.

Godbee said the shooting was being investigated and all information was preliminary. The officer was put on paid administrative leave, he said. Police do not believe the gun was fired intentionally, he said.

"We cannot undo what occurred this morning," Godbee said. "All we can do is to pledge an open and full investigation and to support Aiyana's family in whatever way they may be willing to accept from us at this time."

Jones said he was trying not to be angry but wanted the story to be told.

"This was a wrongful death," he said.

The officers had a search warrant and were looking for a 34-year-old man suspected in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jarean Blake.

Blake, a student at Southeastern High School, was gunned down Friday by a liquor store in front of his girlfriend. Blake stumbled across the street, collapsed and died, police said.

Officers arrested the suspect during the search, Godbee said. Jones said the suspect wasn't in his apartment but one upstairs that officers raided at the same time.

Godbee would not comment on newspaper reports that neighbors told police there were children in the house and showed them toys in the front yard.

"This is a tragedy of unspeakable magnitude to Aiyana's parents, family and all those who loved her," Godbee said. "It is a tragedy we also feel very deeply throughout the ranks of the Detroit Police Department."

The Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality called the girl's death "the pain of pains" in a statement issued Sunday and questioned what protocols police used in the raid. The coalition held a candlelight vigil Sunday evening at the home where she was shot.

I posted this because

This whole situation has just bothered the living hell out of me. The idea that trained SWAT guys have a "stray bullet" just un-nerves me. Making the father lie in his daughters blood is an unforgetable thing to do. I can tell you if it was me blood would be shed, and I would make sure that every one of my "stray bullets" hit right where I intended them to.

Yes, but once again

if the people just would listen to the cops, remain calm...most of the shit like this would be completely avoided.

so when she resisted the home search with police guns drawn his pistol went off in the struggle, yes it is a shame that this happened and im not justifying this by any means but why would you resist if you have not done anything wrong, and it was an accident.

Another thing on this

like many in our society do...we are commenting based on assumptions, the facts have not even been put out there yet, like Obama did with the police who arrested his black professor...best to keep opinions subdued or withheld at least until you have the facts.

I agree Pkato,

ultimately a determination will be made as to exactly who did what and
when. Until then it is all just speculation.......

Absolutely Hamp

and this is the third or fourth time I mentioned this: MOST times, if you just calm down when confronted by police and take a step back, listen to their instructions, everything will get worked out. Both my brothers are police officers and any contact with people could mean their death...they get defensive...but MOST are good people doing a shit job. Think about anytime you got pulled over for a traffic infraction...if you just stayed calm, things went better, if you got pissed off and defensive, things probably got escalated.

Yep, I have never

seen the wisdom in being an asshole to LE, nothing good ever comes
from that. Whenever I get pulled over I first inform the officer of my CC
permit and the fact that I am armed and follow any instructions to the
letter, I have actualy gotten out of a speeding ticket after the conversation
turned to how I liked my Walther....lol

I agree

but also it is human nature...first response is always negative in your mind, like..."What does this asshole want...nothing better to do than pull me over", etc etc! You must learn to get by those first feelings...calm down, count to 10 etc. I can honestly say this: I have NEVER been pulled over for something I didn't do...haha! I think most people can say this. I know there are exceptions, but like you wrote. Becoming an asshole guarantees only one outcome!

I am passionate

about this subject...sorry, but another thing too. If a cop does something illegal...he/she should be punished for it and to me, maybe even held to a higher standard because of their job.

of a video that was the center of great debate on another site. It is dash cam footage of an Ottawa cop who shot a guy on a bike.....I will find it and post it.

First 48

is a great show. I record all of the episodes. What it comes down to, is shit happens. They don't mention all of the search warrants served where shit could have been fubar, but ended peacefully. Its the same as friendly fire. If enough warrants are served, someone will F up somewhere. There's a lot going on when you're looking for a likely armed and hostile murder suspect with nothing to loose, and you have door breaching, flash bangs, stacking and chaos going on. I'm sure the media will run with this one. Try to ban the T.V show, because it was obviously their fault, the murderer's family will get a huge settlement. I feel bad for the family, but children get killed everyday, all over the world. This particular incident happened when a tac response/swat officer, who has probably aided in the apprehension of many violent people, make a mistake.

guys

what ever happened to the ol "keep your finger off trigger til you are ready to shoot"! my son is 12 years old and he knows this basic rule. this poor father had just placed a blanket over his sleeping child and a few minutes later she is shot and dying and he is made to lay face down in her blood!!! Than the city is trying to place blame on his Mother. The kids Grandmom for some stupid cops mistake. FINGER OUTSIDE TRIGGER GAURD TIL YOUR READY TO SHOOT!!!! The First 48 would have a few full seasons worth of episodes.if that happened to be one of my kids. If a mistake was made by Detriots finest then they should fucking own up!! Wrong apartment, cop got scared, and fired on a moving target in the confusion, just happened to be a kid. All the extra bullshit is just that. BULLSHIT!!!! This world is getting real freaking crazy!!!! A young innocent life lost.. And no one willing to own up to it. Its just sad, real sad....Now I'm wondering was the First 48 taping when this shit happened????? Wouldn't want to miss that episode...Or have the chance to be on that cops jury..And if he is SWAT or some sort of Fugitive Recovery unit dude that really sucks ass....Sorry for getting so emotional on this post!!

It's been a long hard road. but I'm still truckin!!
