Do YOU feel safe with Norton Anti-Virus?
Now that I'm nice and coazy in my new nest, I'll string along a bit of information you fellows might be interested in. If any of you use Norton Anti-Virus, be ready to delete it. A recent "update" to the program has come bundled with a program called "PIFTS.exe".. Which, after being dissected by the boys over at /g/, turns out to be a program that scrapes through your browser history, temporary internet files, and who knows what else. It has been confirmed as sending information to a company called "swapdrive", which is "competitive intelligence" company set up in Arlington, VA. Other interesting bits are that that it may be sending information to Microsoft Corporation and even an odd server located somewhere in Africa. But, this tale dosen't end with that. Symatec ( The folks who made Norton ) have deleted EVERY post referring to "PIFTs.exe" outside of their official thread. The reason given is "Spam". There was a spam run on their forum, but it occurred in response to threads being deleted, which means that threads were being deleted BEFORE said attack. I'll leave this for you gents to mull over, and if any of you don't believe my post, do a bit of research on the matter. ( Norton's own forums are a good start, if you want to see how their treating their own customers on the matter. ) |

Er.. This has nothing to do with a "virus" in the traditional sense. This is about an anti-virus company scraping data from its users and sending it not only to domestic servers, but locations abroad.
ssrs10
Still, you'll have no issues....

Here's the straight scoop on the Norton file: http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/03/10/139229. Anyone who deletes Norton just because of this is insane.
Jane
The program scrapes your Internet Explorer cookies, temporary internet files, interfaces with Google Desktop and then tries to send the information to a "competitive intelligence" company, Microsoft and someone in Africa. Those are the facts, without any lean in either direction.
ssrs10
So delete your cookies or tell Internet Explorer to not save them ever......

You have missed me haven't you?

I feel much safer with Norton Anti-Virus than I do Pres Hussein in the White House...
ssrs10
HAHA SamD has officially sabotaged the thread!!!!!!!!!!!
Jane
Tsk tsk. And here I thought you were better then that, but I suppose I gave you too much credit. Since I made this thread in an effort to distribute helpful information and give people a heads up on their right to privacy being infringed on, without any political bent or spin to it, I'd figured you could find objective information useful.
But I'm glad to see you've still got those same, stale antics and a raging e-crush on me.

I don't use IE, personally, since trying to secure that is like using a strainer for an umbrella.
The problem here is that one of the biggest names in the anti-virus sector bundled software in with an update that by all means constitutes malware or spyware.

Honestly Jane I have no idea what to tell you I stopped using Norton a long long time ago because it does too much, it slows even the fastest computers down to a crawl and it allows viruses in, I lost two laptops to BIOS attacking viruses before I realized it was time to change. I used AVG for a while that is quite good. But eventually I just switched operating systems all together. I now use a version of Linux called Ubuntu and I never have any issues with viruses or malware or anything of the sort.....

Hey I saw an article saying that windows vista uses reverse imprinting with your monitor and takes your picture to send to bill gates while he touches himself. And therefore I am always nude when I use my desktop.
Schuyler
READ the thread from slashdot I posted for a complete accounting of this. One guy even took apart the file in question and listed it byte by byte. Norton may not treat its forum well, but this file is a no-brainer that doesn't spy on you or do anything of the sort. You are spreading disinformation here. I'm not surprised. If you want to burn your energy on this conspiracy crap, go right ahead. But to others here, don't get your panties in a twist. I'm trying to save you from needless stress. There's nothing to see here. Move along.
ssrs10
You're one of THEM!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNEW IT ALL ALONG~!
Reaper308
chuck norris as your desktop wallpaper, and he will spy on norton
ssrs10
HAHA Yes.....he's a sneaky SOB
sparticus22286
oh i forgot to say, they only way to stop your monitor from taking your picture is to find the biggest magnet you can and hold it right against the screen. You have to make sure and go over every inch of your screen and dont worry about the wierd noises or colors, thats just the reverse imprinting being erased.

Not that many people know about it: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/. In conjunction with a firewall and anti-virus software this free program can help you sort out vulnerabilities you didn't know you had.
And ANYTIME you come across a rumor about a vulnerability, checkout http://www.slashdot.org. It's very Linux oriented, but these folks are also very smart on Windows. You can't get away with bullshit there. If there's something out there that is harmful they will take it apart and analyze it and tell you the real skinny. Jane's missive here would be laughed out of the building on slashdot.

Been running AVG freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for years now never have a problem with any virus.

I don't know if you guys ever listen to "Leo Laport-The tech guy" or have found him on the internet or not. He does not believe in Norton, but uses "Nod32" antivirus.
