just for target, or for protection too? If its just target, go with a .22 (ammo is cheap, and they're easy to shoot)

besides the 22 try the 9mm, the ammo is not to expensive .at the range i go to i see lots of women shooting berettas and glock 9mms

I THING IS WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME TO SHOOT A LITTLE .22 JUST GET A NICE 9MM AND CLIMB UP UNTILL YOU GET OUR HANDS ON A GOOD CALIBERS LIKE .40/.45/.357 MAG/50MAG ETC...

You always start with a 22. NRA and any place you go to learn how to teach someone about firearms you always start with the fundamentions and build from there. I use to teach basic pistol.

I agree with fordvg,
.22's are a great tool for fundamentals, as are air pistols. Because the projectile is moving slower, they are less forgiving. If you are honest with yourself and can evaluate your own mistakes correctly, you will improve your shooting better with these calibers.
