Don't bring a knife.......
........to a gun fight. A Mesa Az. man who, according to his own mother who he lived with, was suicidal, approached police officers menacingly and they responded by drawing their firearms and shooting the suspect. the suspect has since died. do you think the officers should have tasered him instead? http://www.gunmerchantaccount.com |

Don't bring a knife.......
I'd like to see the vedio, and two angles. Two camers are better than one! This is a hard question to answer. We need more info. on this, to make a dermination.
Was the suspect thereting the police, did he charge?? What was the distance from the suspect and officers?? In my Police traning, a suspect charging you, from 21 ft. distance, can reach you in 1 1/2 seconds!! This gives you less time to decide to pull your weapon, point (aim) and shoot!!
This is what will get a cop killed, or go to jail. If its a bad shoot, yer screwed!!

Remember, that a knife does not need to be reloaded!! A 3" blade will do serious damage!!!

I'll look for some knife wounds, seem we had some on our Site.

for an encounter with an edged weapon is 20 feet, that means' if someone is confronting you aggressively with a knife, that person can cover twenty feet by the time you can pull your gun and shoot.
I'm not a LE but i think even as a civie if someone trys to menace me with a knife, that person has violated 3 rules i live by,(1) don't fuck with me,(2) don't fuck with me,(3) don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

in this instance mentioned, the guy was walking forward with the knife. One of the officers was backing up in a defensive manner and tripped. After he tripped (while on his back on the ground) the guy with the knife charged his aggressively. The other officer made the right decision to put him down. In that situation... 1. He didn't have time to re-holster his weapon, draw the taser, acquire the target and shoot, and 2. there is no 100% certainty that the taser would have stopped the aggressor. If the first officer wasn't in such a vulnerable position and they had time, it might make sense for one officer to try a taser while the other kept his firearm drawn, but this was the right call here.

actually come before unarmed self defense in their levels of force. So many of the times where cops use tasers on a subject with a knife or pipe or other weapon, the cops are actually responding with much less force than they're authorized to. Even a broom handle can be a dangerous weapon and using deadly force against that can be defended in court.

Is not a counter-knife weapon. When cops use a Taser or any less-lethal weapon on an armed threat, I think they are being at best very gracious and at worst negligent.
Myself and other officers at my organization have used the Taser on suspects armed with edged weps, but only when there are limiting factors (contained suspect, backup officers WITH GUNS close at hand, entry shields, etc.)...and even so we realize we are threading the needle and taking a risk with our own safety (never to others). The Taser has to do a lot of things "just right" to stop a violent attacker, and even then many 'stops' are people who simply give up rather than being actually incapacitated.
Most people who have opinions about the Taser (lots of lawyers, M.E.s, Amnesty Int'l whiners, etc.) haven't even completed a basic 1-day training course. I'd feel like a schmuck if I got on a car forum and offered opinions on capabilities of a type of vehicle I'd never even owned much less driven, but then again plenty of folks don't mind looking like schmucks.

The normal public watches Cops on TV and knows the tasers have laser sights so the cop should be able to easily take down even the most violent bad guy with no effort because there's a laser and a painful sounding noise when the taser is deployed.
You dumb cops should also know that once a cop draws his weapon, the bad guy automatically gives up because that bad guy is just a misunderstood victim of society and poverty and other social ills, and that bad guy is never high or drunk or adrenaline-charged.

It seems such a waste in this country that people kill themselves out of pity instead of doing something about whatever they are depressed about... If you are willing to self sacrifice you CAN make a difference since death is not your fear...

I agree with LBC's 20 foot rule, if you're coming at me with a knife, be prepared for a 'double tap' at 30'.
