EDM M96 .50 BMG Advice?
I was looking for various .50 BMG rifles to get away from the standard single shot rifles and/or Barrett rifles and I happened upon a 5 shot, magazine fed, bolt action repeating .50 BMG rifle made by E.D.M. Arms. The rifle itself is has a 30" barrel but it breaks down with an Uzi style lug nut at the barrel to fit in a case 32" long. I was curious as to what the quality on E.D.M. Arms' weapons are and if anyone has ever seen this rifle. Thanks. |

The EDM company makes an exceptional product! In competition it is a fine example of what a rifle should do. Whether in single shot or the five round mag it makes for a formidable piece of craftsmanship on the firing line. It holds zero when reassembled, cleans quickly. Offers adjustable cheekweld, stock length, different barrels,(Check with mfr. They are friendly, and offer support) and just work like yeomen as reliable time and again shooters. The bipod is of good design and is very adjustable to terrain. On the bench or the ground it is something to respect at a match. From what I have seen, at 1000 yards on in they are impressive.

Thanks alot. My main concern was the removable barrel and how well it would maintain its zero. I've been pretty busy and haven't been able to do any research on the weapon system myself. I'm planning on making this rifle coupled with a Nightforce 5.5-22x50 optic my next purchase.

How far out do you want to shoot? This baby has got range in spades.

The farthest I have access to is between 600 and 800 yds. Its my uncles farm. I just love the idea of an anti-material, precision platform. Just something about the sheer power of the .50 BMG round.

There are short 600 yard matches designed for practical shooters to play in with the 50 BMG. It sounds like you have the basic playground to work on that if you wanted. They are really progressive things to get involved with. Of course just shooting a big bore is a hoot. Not many guns give that kind of a rush.

I had the pleasure of shooting the M107 while I was in the Marine Corps and It was a blast.

Bit much isn't it?
Why not a 308 or 338 and shave down the cost of ammo?
If you are never going to shoot beyond 1000 yards it seems it would be a waste of weapon don't you think?
soullesss
It probably would be considering the weapon's capabilities. To be blunt, however, I just want the power.

If range was the issue, there are more accurate extreme distance rounds than the .50. I want a .50 not so much for shooting long distance, but for blowing shit up at closer ranges. I really want to see if any local farmers have sick cows and buy one to shoot at 100 yds with a .50.
ronin1604
That's just sick.... LOL!

But fun. Extreme Shock makes frangible .50 rounds. The Extreme Shock .223 round creates an 8" diameter ENTRY wound in clay, can you imagine the impact of a .50 projectile built like that?
Glorious.

Iraq, guy shooter someone setting up a mortar tube at 1350 yards and cut him in half....
Sniper was setup 8 feet into the building so no one knew exactly where the round came from.
The enemy mortar team had been setting up beyond the range of the weapons at the outpost for a period of time, up until the point the Hammer showed up...
He said they quit the nightly mortar fire after that....
LOL
guess they are totally stupid..
Ishootdaily
True...
The .50 hits like a Freight Train destroying what it hits and it would be a blast to have let alone shoot.
Soulless, you sure as hell want to make sure that if any get away they do not carry into populated areas. You can use Propane cans used for Barbeque's as Reactive targets... Night shooting would be pretty much a BLAST...

I was planning on just 1 gallon gas cans, with armor penetrating incendiary rounds from firequest.com. The rounds are rather expensive at $120.00 for a pack of 25 but its definitely worth it.
If you would like to take a peek here is the URL. It also says where the rounds are illegal at on this page.

of big guns is making me want an AR-50 instead of a DPMS. Son of a bitch!

We don't have a range that allows anything but standard ammo anymore. Wayne from A1 Tactical took his Hummer with a Minigun on top shooting tracers down to Area 51 and started the woods on fire after catching the grass and stuff on the berm on fire.
Now only at special shoots or when they allow you to drag some cars and trucks out onto the range to tear part.

Just checked out that site, I'd double check on the legal points beyond what they claim. I see they sell 12 gauge Fletchette rounds and I'm pretty sure those are illegal at least here in Florida.
Reaper308
is illegal in Florida? I thought you guys were pretty good with gun laws...
Ishootdaily
But if you get caught using Fletchette or Bolo rounds in defense your ass is grass waiting to be chewed up.
Armor-Piercing Ammunition
It is unlawful in the state of Florida to possess any type of armor-piercing ammunition, Anyone found in possession of such types of ammunition, or offers such ammunition for sale including "dragon's breath" shotgun shells and flachette shells, commits a felony of the third degree punishable by incarceration in a state penitentiary for up to five years. Those in possession of armor-piercing ammunition with the intent to use it commit a felony of the second degree punishable by up to 15 years in a state prison.
Reaper308
was that passed after the miami shootout?

It snuk up on my brother and I shooting bolo's at some watermelons playing around last year. I'll have to find out because it was something that I meant to do, we used to dick around with all kinds of crap like stacking Nickels and stuff.

More of a fall back to use if they ever want you ass in prison...
Kind of like the Statute Book, there is a Statute to be used on any car so it can be pulled over legally if the Officer so chooses. Even a new off the show room floor car will have something in that book...
