Military quotes

"PVT Marlow, when you become a leader, remember the three M's of leadership; Mission, Men, Me. Always in that order". SSG Todd, my first squad leader.

"I'm not trying to break you, private. I'm just gonna smoke the dog shit out of you". SFC Houston, my first platoon sergeant.

"Soldiers of the Battleforce, you are now the round in America's chamber". My first battalion commander when we took over Defensive Ready Force 1, but to this day, I can't remember his name.

"If you freeze up, I will stab you in the leg with my knife, you will get MEDEVAC'd out, you'll get a purple heart because I'll say it was enemy action, and people back home will think you're a hero. But when you're alone, you'll know you got that medal because you fucked up and SSG Marlow stabbed your ass". My guidance to a new soldier in my squad shortly before my most recent trip to Iraq. She did fine.

"I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. The calling of arms, I have followed from boyhood. I have never sought another." From The Virtues of War, by Steven Pressfield.

1978, A USMC major talking about the Ranger Bn., at Ft Lewis WA. quote "The Marine Corps is just looking for a few good me. Looks like the Army found them". That was a momentary reflection I bet he wishes was never uttered. That was a long time ago. I thought everyone had 1st rate troops then and now. Some, just needed a bit more motivation than others.

Mosinfreak: well but

davy crockett was a US Representative from Tennessee at the time he said that to the full house. it is in the official congressional record too. and he was only a captain at that Alamo. in theory both captain james dickenson and captain james bowie outranked him by length of service. but by the time bowie arrived at the Alamo, he was already dying from consumption, a combination of tuberculosis and pneumonia, he was confined to the hospital by the second day of his arrival. supposedly dickenson was put in command of the south wall facing santa anna's main force and he and crockett only spoke one time. no one will ever know the what happened, inside the Alamo, after mrs. dickenson left in charge of the wagon train with the women and children.

Commodore David Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Note: 'torpedoes' were more like mines. Also, there is no clear evidence he ever said that, but it is in military folklore anyway. He was the first person to achieve the ranks of rear admiral, vice admiral, and full admiral in the United States Navy.

who went into Okinawa with the first wave of Marines. In the first 15 days of the fighting, he was awarded every major decoration the Marine Corps and the Navy could award, plus a battlefield Commission from Chief Petty Officer[Medical] to Lieutenant Sr. Grade.[He also was recommended for the MOH].
When he was interviewed for the "Greatest Generation", they asked him why he enlisted on December 8, 1941, instaed of waiting for the draft.

"Every minute we waited for the draft, to get stronger, is a minute those bastards thought WE were getting weaker. When they looked at our enlistment rate, I wanted them to see that we really did not need the draft....the message was: 'we are coming for you by the millions, and there is no place for you to hide'."
Indeed, on the 15th day on Okinawa, leading a platoon in cave clearing, he proved that there was no place for them to hide. In hand to hand combat, after being wounded by an officer's Nambu, he killed his assailant who pushed him over a high ledge and fell on top of him, crushing several critical vertibrae. He spent the rest of his life as a hemi-plegic, serving his community as the Director of Civilian Defense, and running a successful business.
[He said that his greatest honor was to be proclaimed an honorary Marine, by the Marine Corps General whose life he saved, by performing emergency surgery under intense enemy fire. He was not a doctor, but he was a medical buff, who got to watch all kinds of different surgeries performed by a friend of the family, at his local hospital.]
Incidentally--this IS a true story. I know, because that man was my uncle.

Too old to fight, Too old to run, guess that's why I carry a gun! "would someone show this asshole the way out of town".[Rabbi Avram Belinski-aka "The Frisco Kid"]
