I'm looking for a handgun that will keep me protected. I want it to 'do the job' if someone is attacking me. I know it's horrible to want to kill someone but I've been attacked too many times, this time I'm going to be ready.

Any advice will help.

Thanks in advance.

First thing to do

in my humble opinion, is take a course. Then take a pistol course. In my area they do several courses for women only that are always well attended, so you don't have to deal with all the testosterone. Then you will become familiar with the alternatives available. And, umm, don't mind us. Sometimes we're a little gross, but most everyone here is bottom-line serious. Welcome.

I second what Schuyler has said about the courses. But I believe the lady asked what type of gun was recommended? My recommendation is to find what works for you... venture to a shop and see what feels good in your hand and consider size/weight/caliber, dont buy anything right away, meaning do some research before you buy what ever it may end up to be...
more important is to learn to use it though.

Welcome stewy2002

Welcome to the site. For a handgun I would do what the other guys said about tring handguns that fit you. See which one fits your hand. I do this for my wife to see if she likes the feel of the handgun. Taking a gun class would be a great ideal to. Feel free to ask questions would be glad to help.

rather than have all of us say "You need an XYZ 2000 best firearm on the planet." Well, what if it doesn't fit your hand? I didn't really know until I held it that a Glock 19 fit my hand perfectly--no pinky overlap or anything. On the other hand, that semi is probably too small for greasy.

but you'll have to wire $500 to my offshore bank account so I can pay a bribe necessary to get it into the country. Once that is done I'm sure everything will be okay.

have you seen the pic and info on "my new Glock"? If not, I think you will enjoy it, since you also love Glocks.

Welcome! You're the only one that can decide what handgun is best for you. Like the others have said, try them all on for size. You can kill a man with an ink pen if you know what to do, and you're willing to do it. I wouldn't worry as much about caliber as I would , about getting a gun that feels good in your hand, and you like to shoot it. You're going to need to shoot it a lot to get really good, and confident with it. I would assume that you don't handload your own bullets, so cost of ammo is another consideration. The bigger the bullit, the more they cost(normally). You can also get some of these guns with .22 conversion kits, so you can shoot them a lot more economically, and that's the only way you will get good with any pistol. Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, keep asking questions.

Gun rental

Try a gun rental....then buy. Please try a Walther PPS, Glock 26, Walther P22. The PPS has interchangable grip sizes. The glocks do not. Reliable Walther handguns.....

welcome stewy and dont mind everyone, they all have ADD. ;) you definitely want to "testride" a gun before you buy one, like you would do with a car.

welcome to gunslot, you'll find a lot of advise here, and a joke or two also, get a gun that fits your hand and feels comfortable. there are a lot to choose from. let us know what your price range is and we'll try to help narrow it down for you. I'm a big fan of the springfield armory XD. Keep the questions coming.

The RPG it is perfect for home defence, family target shooting, and revenge on ex-boyfriends cars. You will love it, either that or I think a chick with a mini-gun is hott.

Gun Rentals

Gun rentals are good and all, but you have to understand what you're getting into when you talk about defensive cartridges. Renting guns will confirm that a .22 LR is easier to shoot accurately than a .44 mag. You need a base few calibers to try out. In revolvers, .38 SPL should be about the smallest you go, and in autos, 9mm, 40 S&W, or 45 ACP should be the top three choices. I personally prefer 9mm, as it is a very effective cartridge with the right bullet type, it is much cheaper to practice with than the other rounds, it has a higher capacity than the others in a similarly sized gun, and the lower recoil allows faster follow up shots. Rather than going to a range to find the mind-numbing variety of guns and cartridges available, go there with a base few calibers and then try guns that fit you. Don't take anyone's word when they try to tell you which gun will be best. There are always salesmen or people trying to reaffirm their choice in gun by getting others to buy the same thing. Nearly all major manufacturers make guns that will last longer than you and will be suitably reliable for defense. Forget anyone that tries to sell you a gun that passed some crazy torture test, as you are probably not going to use your gun to take Iwo jima or crawl through a field of mud before stopping an invasion while getting run over by a pickup truck after firing 10,000 rounds.
