My thought is to find out what he has, and find accessories. If it is a magazine-fed rifle or pistol, spare mags are always appreciated. If you can find out what it is he has and make a new post, I can give you some great ideas, as I am a very materialistic gun owner. I think we're called "geardos".

depending on how much you want to spend and what type of pistol it is, night sights are always a cool and much appreciated gift for a hundgun owner. I agree with runaway, extra mags are a big plus too. Maybe even a holster of some kind. When all else fails, the good ole T-shirt will work, insured by ____________, middle finger not working watch for the _________, you name it.

Ammo & targets

Wait until you get there, then just buy ammo for whatever caliber it is and some targets. Then he can shoot it and become more proficient with it.
