I'm looking to buy my first handgun. It's primarily for defense and must be carryable. With what I've shot, I'm stuck on a .40 It's between the Glock 23c (found new for $510) and a Springfield Xd ( a co-worker has a never fired one with all the originals + a quickloader, 4 ten bullet capacity clips, 50 rounds of hollow point and 100 rounds of regular ammo all for $600). I definitly want reliability. I like the idea of an external safety (the back of the handle on the Springfield). However I love the abusability of the Glock and it's lifetime warranty. Which way to go? HELP

I guess my first question would be have you actually shot either gun to see which one if either suits you better? For most people that is the key.

what one fits best in your hands? You may not be able to find one to shoot plus gun stores ( here in fla) let u shoot them to death so when you get to shoot it,it might be broke in. IF possable get them sid eby side fire 100 rounds each then write the pro's and con's of them both and think it over. great like a sam doing the same with the same guns.

I have shot both Glock and I own 2 XD's a .45 and a 9mm and I love my XD's. I have never had a single jam in my Springfeilds and would not hesitate recomending them to anyone. If you go with the XD welcome to the Croation Nation.

thanks

HamsterW, fair question.I shot the 23 last weekend for a while along with the 22. I haven't shot the Springfield. I've been trying to be very diligent about experience and research. I'm not one of those Rambo wannabe hard-ons that's just about shootin' and blowin' things up. Although definitely fun, I respect a gun for what it is. It's a serious tool with serious consequences if you don't educate yourself on it. I'm a craftsman by trade so I believe in "know your tools". Now that I've got that pontificating out of the way!Truth be told the 23 and the Springfield both need a longer clip or an extension piece to completely fit my hand. The 23 seems impossible to find used. I heard you can you upgrade the barrel on a 23c to .45. Can you do it with a Springfield? Luckybychoice, what were your issues?

I really appreciate all the input. What I would appreciate even more is something a little more concrete than Glock! or Springfield! ie: which? AND why? Don't be affraid to give specifics.

I haven't shot either the glock or the xd but the xd feels better in my hand to me than the glock and a couple of my co-workers swear by their xd's. Choose whichever one is most comfortable to you both shooting and carrying.

in my opinion. To me it feels better, and is more reliable. I had problems with my Springy XD.....maybe I'am still bitter, but my brother and best friend sold their XD's and bought Glocks after shooting mine!

on the XD

I was shooting at a Gun manufacturers trial day,all the reputable guns were there( sorry hipoint hank) so it was go to the Springfield Booth, pick out a gun,and they gave you 10 rounds to shoot, these reps hadn't cleaned these guns all day.kind of a torture test.Anyway my son was gonna buy the XD,i told him about ebears trouble with the one he had,my son didn't listen. So i got a Glock 34,my son got the XD and we went into the range side by side. The Glock performed flawlessly, the XD fired twice, failed to extract,so my son had one round in the chamber and another round stuffed in behind it partially stripped off the mag lips.He had to dump the mag, clear one round, and take a pocket knife to the spent casing still in the chamber from the fired round. After that he reloaded the mag.squeezed off a round, and experienced the same thing. This was a new XD,my son unloaded the XD mag and finished shooting his ammo thru the Glock. We brought the gun back up to the rep and told him what happened and he said"yes, the gun needs to be cleaned" hmmm. The Glock was going thru the same scenario, yet it functioned well.I'm not slamming Springfields i really want to like them but i have no time for a gun that won't work, yes i know people can tell stories of Glocks failing too.I haven't personally experienced that yet.

I'm a Glock guy

I magically hit the target about every time with my G34, but my wife's XD is the most comfortable auto I've ever fired. Practical reliability really is no different between the two, unless you plan to qabuse the gun you carry every day and may have to trust your life with.

although I'm not a fan of compensated models (muzzle flash in low lighting will blind you), If you're looking for reliability and something that you can abuse, you have to go with the glock. I like the fact that you can drop in a 9mm conversion bbl (or .357 sig) in the 23 and with some G19 mags... you'll have a 9mm also. You cannot make the G23 into a .45 (you can only go down in size).

I see where your going you'd like to have some definitive info on the two pieces.. Your looking for an objective analysis on the two weapons, and thats hard unless you have a couple of factory reps and they stand toe to toe and debate the issue..

I think your fine with either purchase.. I believe that more LE agencies use Glock than any other, but thier could be cost considerations involved with that decision..

I have never been that much of Glock fan, but i can tell you that the agency i retired from (az doc) transitioned in the mid 90's and i went to a good 10 years of range qualifications, and the reliability of the system can't be challenged..

Your reference point is diffrent than a lot of us who are gun fanatics, and might be more subjective about a purchase..Bottom line is neither have a major flaw, I've fired them both, and prefer the Springfield.. but personally would buy a 357 revolver, or a 1911 in 45.. so good luck with my objectivity..

What the hell Greg, Where's the stats? Just kidding. Although you didn't make my choice any easier I appreciate the input. I understand the sound rationale behind a revolver for my primary. I had the opportunity to fire a S&W revolver with .357 rounds. It was definitely fun and i would certainly consider it as a "fun gun". However, I'm just not feeling it as my primary. To me the Glock is not all that attractive, and I don't like the lack of an external safety. Yet something draws me to it. The Springfield (which I find out is an XD "m") feels better in my hand (as long as I have a larger clip or extender) and is a little more attractive. Looks are a nice bonus, but not necessity. Right now functionality is more of a concern. I guess you're right I'll have to fire them each side by side.

If you are going to abuse or neglect the gun, don't bother getting one. I'm not saying you should baby your guns (I take dremel tools and spraypaint to mine), but if you are carrying something that you may have to trust your life or, more importantly, the lives of loved ones to, then keeping them maintained and in good working order is a must. Even the most reliable gun in the world will fail at some point without preventive maintenance.

If you're worried about dropping it during training, or getting it dirty by practicing ground fighting drills while wearing it (unloaded, unloaded, unloaded, unloaded. Oh. And unloaded), don't be. Even mediocre guns are tougher than we are. I doubt you'll be running your personal carry gun through a 10,000 round no lube/rapid fire/salt water immersion/underwater firing/truck drag/mud bath/frozen in ice/baked in an oven torture test, so practical reliability is the same between the XD and the Glock.

By the way, the Glock has undergone all those tests and more. I'm just saying.

Not My Plan

My intent isn't to abuse the gun. Although I'm doing my best to educate myself, I'm not so naive as to believe that my first one won't receive unintentional abuse just from simple lack of knowledge and/or inexperience. I don't want to spend a sizable chunk of money on a gun and then ruin it. That's why I want something that will be a little more forgiving to my learning curve.

There is no abuse you are going to subject your gun to that it can't handle unless you are trying. As a new gun owner, you will typically take better care of your gun than us more experienced guys because you will still have that apprehension about handling a potentially deadly tool. Us more experienced guys sometimes get complacent and leave the guns laying around, or shoving it into a pocket, or cramming it into a glove box. New people tend to use the factory box, and tend to observe the gun safety rules more diligently. Don't worry about hurting your gun because you won't.

Why the 40? Stick to a NATO standard or more common round. 9mm or 45cal. SHTF you'll be more likely to find these 2 than 40.

I have owned/shot the XD40 and the Glock 23. I used both during the four day defensive handgun course at Front Sight, and found both to be excellent, reliable handguns. I actually performed better with the Glock, but I certainly did not dislike the XD at all. I chalk the better performance up to the fact that the Glock FIT MY HAND better than the XD, and the Glock was far easier to handle during the clearing of type I, II, and III malfunctions. The XD, with the external 1911 grip type safety had a significantly stronger spring which was hard for me to manipulate because of wimpy hands. I appreciate the fact that many people are tense and anxious about not having external safeties. But that is just what it is--tension and anxiety, because they do not fully understand the design of the Glocks, IMHO.

Those posters, above, who suggested that good ergonomic fit is very important, are very wise people--there is no substitute. You need the utmost in confidence when the SHTF. So, a $2000 whiz bang that doesn't feel all that good may kill you, while a well proven $600 piece that really fits will help you save the day.

I appreciate every ones input. It's definitely helped. To answer a previous question. Well I picked the .40 because I wanted more stopping power than the parabellums and I wanted cheaper than the .45. I may eventually graduate to the .45 as time goes by and may even get a 9 as a cheaper alternative for those days I want to go target shooting just for fun. I think I'm gearing more towards the Glock. I still have to get a chance to actually shoot the XDM. On the bright side, I may actually have an opportunity to get both. Then I won't have to decide. If that's the case then my hardest choice will be which laser sights (leaning towards the Laserlyte rear sight Laser) and which holster to pick for best and most comfy concealing.

Well it's official. I got the springfield xd today. Gun (never fired) , case, lock, holster, 2 double clip holders, 2 clips, 2 extended clips, speed loader, 100 rounds of ammo, and 50 rounds of hollowpoint. All for $500. If that's not enough I have a glock 23 (4th gen) on its way. Thanks all for the advice, even though I didn't have to decide it was nice to have the info.

It's an XD. I wanted the XDm, but that wasn't the offer presented to me. Oh well. Hopefully I'll have the Glock by Tuesday and be at Firing Line (my local range) this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Leartes: XD vs. Glock

Leartes

The XD9M is my weapon I carry every day... With 19 rounds in the mag and 1 in the chamber you should not need any more firepower than that!

The reliability of the Glock vs. the XD will be pretty much the same since they are both awesome manufacturers... The simple aspect of Glock that I do not like is the "Euro Grip" that requires a shooter to aim down to aim straight due to the angle of the hand grip.... Steyr also has this issue and I just don't like it...

Otherwise both guns are great!

PS: The XD has a promo right now that gets you a total of 5 factory mags with your new gun too!
