Hi,
Just bought a Glock 19 and started to look at the ammo.
Now, I see that it uses 9mm 9x19 Lugar type.
But, looking online there are several option that are confusing.
1. What is important about the "Grain"? I've seen ranges from 115 - 147.
2. Is a Full Metal Jacket important?
3. Is there a difference in the manufacturer? American Eagle, Blazer, MagTech?
4. Will any 9mm type function in the Glock?
5. What would be considered a good price/type of ammo for target practice?
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to Gunslot.
I too own a Glock 19.
Grains is weight of bullet.
Full Metal Jacket aka FMJ is for the range and out plinking.
For personal defense, home, carry, etc. get Hollow Points, Hornaday DPX, Federal Hydro Shok and many others.
Yes the cheaper the ammo, generally the dirtier it is or non-reloading, non brass shells. I buy Winchester FMJ at Walmart $9 - 10.00 a box. For target shooting.
Russian Ammo, the Bear brands are just real dirty to shoot.
9mm is a 9X19mm cartridge. aka, Luger, 9mm and Parabellum.
Hope this helps. Good luck,
samD

Ammo

Thanks for the info.
I looked up:
Federal Premium Hydro Shok Jacketed Hollow Point. 20 rds per box
It seems rather expensive. It also comes in 124 or 147 grain. Which is better?

Ammo query

I think that is subjective. If you want to know the technical stuff, ask Reaper308, greasypaws or fordvg, they are really knowledgable in this stuff.

Go with the 147 grain hydro shok for home protection. Yeah its more expensive but why put a price on your safety or your familys safety. I keep the good stuff in my guns at home and use the cheap stuff for target shooting.

Do not go with 147 gr

It is nearly universally agreed that the 147 gr bullet is much better suited to submachine gun use or use with suppressed weapons than to defensive pistol use. This is especially true in a compact frame like the G19. You might, and I stress "might" get enough velocity for reliable expansion in a full frame G17, but not in the G19. I have a G19 and G26, and they both like the Cor Bon 115 gr +P and the Speer Gold Dot HP 124 (or is it 125?) gr +P. I know, all the literature says don't use +P in Glocks, but it'll be fine as you should use enough to become familiar with and the rest of your training should be with FMJ. For training ammo I like the Winchester 115 gr FMJ. As my compadre Sam says, it's pretty inexpensive at Wal-mart, I buy the 100 round value packs for 19.96. My further advice, as I have stated elsewhere, get rid of the garbage Glock sights (the only bad thing about a Glock) and get a set of Trijicon three dot night sights or The XS Big Dot sights.

g19

Cor Bon JHP 115gr. +P (higher velocity)
Cor Bon DPX 115 gr. +P (deeper penetration using barnes X)

I use both but prefer DPX. Also good: Federal tactical HST, Federal Hydro Shok, Hornady TAP, Winchester SXT. What ever you decide on, I recommend +P.

And I agree, go with the Trijicon night sights
