My vote would be the Glock all things considered. Price, reliablity, shootablity, and just plain good value. The Glock 17 and 19 are very good choices. There are good things to say about the others you mentioned, so they are also good considerations. Try them out and chose the one he shoots the best...

They come in a variety of calibers from a 9mm to a .45. The one that you want is a 9mm. Here try this link

I agree with Snake on this. I recently purchased a Glock because of all the messianic stories I heard about the weapon. I still carry it as it is the tool that fits the requirement. But I prefer my HK over the glock and my WWI Colt over all else.

I have a problem with the stories about how indestructible Glocks are, and then you have caveats to these claims. It is recommended that you only fire factory ammo, never use lead, use only ball ammo, etc. I have had no problems, nor these "outrageous" caveats on any other weapon. But the Glock functions fine when following the above caveats.

I concur with ssdd71 that you should go to a range and rent each weapon. Fire them on their own accord and choose what works best for you.

if he can spare the extra $300, I say go with the HK or a Sig. If not, there is nothing wrong with a glock. very reliable.

xd's are good. they are both good quality, it just comes down to preference (feel and what you shoot the tightest groups with)

The XD is in my opinion, is just above the Glock on my "want list" because I love the way it looks, but I like them both. For most the Glock is a better guy because they are both great quality and come in a variety of different calibers. Still, the Glock comes in allot more variations within those calibers. You have the option of two compensated Glocks for lesser recoil, Compact and sub compact versions of almost all the calibers. Not to mentions the Glocks are also an easier weapon to find barrel conversions for. So you can have one pistol with an easy to change barrel and many options depending on what caliber you want to carry. However, it really comes down to which on feels better and sights better for you, which one feels more natural.

I shot them both. The proof of the pudding is I own an XD40. I consider the ergonomics and general human factors of the XD superior to the Glock. But I recognize your, and other peoples', hands and arms are not the same configuration as mine.
I am not interested in barrel conversions, and if I want to supress recoil, I'll get some work done on mine.
So--you pays your money and takes your choice.

the xd also offers conversions barrels, http://www.barsto.com/category_main.cfm?ID=XD&cco=63 ported or " compensated" models, with tactical, compact and sub compact aswell. Along with more safty features i think

they are a piece of crap. You can buy a Firestar in 9mm for about $300 to $350 great little carry piece. Glocks are bad about having feeding problems.

I resemble that Glock remark. I love my Glock and am buying more. Very accurate, reliable, durable and safe. My Glock 19 feeds everything I throw at it...

SamD,
I had a problem with my Glock that it would not feed semi wad cutters.
My biggest problem with Glock is perception. THey are made out to be the end all be all of the pistol market, I agree that they are an engineering masterpiece, but I would favor my 100 year old Colt .45. It has eaten everything from realods with factory bullets to casted lead wad and semi wad cutter bullets.

You can buy all the Glock's you want, that is find with me. I don't like them and I will buy pistols that I do like. That is the great thing about living in the USA. So, the same thing goes with buying cars or trucks, that is how we keep companies in business.

trying to make it personal. I stated my opinion and you yours. I like Glock and you don't. So long as we both have what we like, then the world goes around. I certainely can't push my will on you and vice-versa. Not trying to do that. Sorry if you felt that way.

I think it was Reaper308 that told me not to use reloads with a Glock as it will void the warranty. So much for an engineering masterpiece...

I dont like the feel of the Glock's or S&W's at all, though I have never shot any of these. So I guess that is another vote for the USP. What about Heckler & Koch's H&K 45? Any info on that one?

My wife was going to school for the police out in LA county and they used the Glocks for a short time. She said, they had trouble with all of them, they were getting rid of them because the pistol jamed every third round, all of the guns they had. They where to Smith & Wesson for they pistol after that. I know the cops up home in Indiana use the Smith & Wesson.

my vote goes to Sigs, Hk's, Glocks, XD's what ever. they are all good guns. depends on your budget and preference.

fordvg- I have never heard of glocks jamming every third round in my life. they are made to shoot dry and even when they're really dirty. they are really low maintence. Like I said above I've put over 20,000 rounds through glocks without ONE problem. I do agree that they're ugly... but they're damn reliable.
