I have to say they are both very well built and both and large groups as followers. the difference between the guns is massive, so its all about feel.
My personal choice would be Smith&Wesson M&P.40, it felt amazing in my hands and it had natural sights(meaning when the gun is brought to eye level, it is all ready sighted in with perfect soight picture). Plus the amazing build.

Glock field strip 101
1.Remove the magazine.
2.Pull the slide back and hold (which also removes any rounds in the chamber)
3.Pull the slide release tabs on each side of the gun with your thumb and index finger of the opposite hand.
4.Release the slide, pull the trigger, and pull the slide forward off of the gun.
RECAP:
- before you ever pull the trigger the mag must be out and you have already cleared the chamber. How is this dangerous? I think the only safety feature missing a manual safety, but its safe enough with all of the built in safetys.
Both the glock and M&P and good weapons. Like sytasyn said above... go with what feels the best in your hand. Shot them both.
I personally like the glock (I own a 19 and 23, and am about to buy a 20). it has been tested to withstand 100,000 rounds.... can shoot underwater... it has been tourture tested in sand and the worst weather conditions...you can swap .40, .357, and 9mm barrels etc... It has been proven over the past 20 yrs. The M&P is a fairly new weapon system that I doubt has been tested as regorously. I would go with the one that is already proven.
