Grandpappy

So My grandfather served in the vietnam war (god bless all our troops). All through his arms training he used a springfield M1a, also known as the M14. When he was sent to nam they handed him an M16a1 and told him to kick some ass. That he did. The point of this thread is that I'm going to buy him an M14 (I'm in the process of going to every burger joint, guitar shop, etc. to find some money). I want to get an engraving on the stock.

I want it to say

(military rank) Donald (middle initial. last name)
(year he was born)-2007
(military rank) Frank (middle initial. last name)
(year he was born)-present
"This is my rifle, there are others like it, but this one is mine!"

Do military personel actually say that, or is it just from movies? I would like some opinions on this and maybe something to add? Thaks guys.

p.s. the stuff in perenthesis, some I dont know, some I'm protecting my gpa and great gpas identity, Even tho grandpa Don is dead.

you'll want just a regular M1A with a walnut stock (like the middle one in the pic below)

ok cool, what is the

ok cool, what is the difference between the top and middle rifles? I see the obvious visual differences, but like, functionality? plus It will probobly be hard to get one in perfect condition though, I guess Ill just pray the the local gun shops have a good one.

Edit: let me rephrase that. Why wouldnt I want the top one?

the top one is a M1 garand. I thought you wanted a M1A (civilian version of the M14). The middle one is a standard M1A and the lower one is a M1A socom (16 in. bbl). You can get a brand new M1A from Springfield, so it will be in new condition.

garands are 30.06, M1A's are 7.62/.308. Garands have an internal fixed magazine, M1A's use standard 10rd or 20rd. box mags. You can find 25 and 30rd. mags also, but the quality is hit and miss.

you can get a new standard M1A for around $1500. If you research enough, you can probably find a better deal, or find a really nice used one. If you upgrade to the loaded or match version, the price goes up

also

yes, they make 5 rd mags. M1A mags arn't cheap (real springfield mags). The 5 rd is between $30-$40 and the 20 rd. is around $40-$50. There are aftermarket mags, but like I said, they're hit and miss with reliability.

Elgoo, the engraving

"This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine". It's part of The Rifleman's Creed, which is found in the front few pages of the M16A2 technical manual. I'll post a thread with the whole thing for you to avoid a long ass post just to answer your question.

"I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. The calling of arms, I have followed from boyhood. I have never sought another." From The Virtues of War, by Steven Pressfield.
