Hi and welcome to gunslot.com
Without knowing your size, stature or temprament, it would be hard to establish what you need or could use.
Smaller women tend to stay with .38/.380 or 9mm. Best possible way is for you to go to a Shooting Range, were they rent handguns and you can try out. The rangemasters are always willing to help out. Fees for rentals run around $8 to $10. Range fees are $5 to $12. Some ranges have free ladies days. But if you have specific questions, someone on here will be able to help...
Enjoy our site and again, please feel free to ask.
I carry a 9mm Glock19, very light, accurate and reliable. It has enough killing power to stop almost anyone, trying to harm you.

to add to sams advice, I would ask your local range prices on thier beginners classes. usually about 125.00 - 150.00. that will include the gun rentals and expert help in choosing the right weapon and how to uses and care for it.

Since we have at least one Brit and one Aussie...maybe even a Kiwi...maybe a different name could be used for fanny as in fanny pack...see, fanny in those countries means something entirely different!!! Anyway, I can't disagree with any of the information you got already. However, the best bet is to do what SamD told you...go shoot under controlled conditions with a professional staff. Many good guns, but if it doesn't feel comfortable in your hand you will have difficulty.
