I heard somthing about the Armed Forces guns have a special security System that will only let the owner of the gun shoot it. If some one else trys to shoot it, it wont function. Anyone heard of this?

yes. I've never heard of "armed forces" having this technology because it is really expensive. possibly some special ops units have it. it is available to civilans also. I remember when I first heard about it a couple years ago it cost around $10,000

sure, I guess. IF it was free or IF I was a multi millionaire. It would be a great safety if you have kids in the house.

Of course, Im talking about MY personal weapons.... Like Sam said, it doesn't make sense for combat situations.

We need every available weapon in combat! Guns jam & break. Soldiers toss around guns like yo-yos. You use whatever you can get your hands on in a real firefight. There are no time outs or pause the game in real life!

Gentlemen, good to be back, went to stay with my sister after a break in (kicked in the door) There is a use in law enforcement, in tight situations, a bad guy etc. gets your gun, its a lot harder to shoot you with it.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they ticked me off.

Thanks, sorry, it was my Sister's house. She lives alone and doesn't know much about handling firearms. As for the use of biometrics, I agree combat use is not practical. General law enforcement- can lose their weapon during an encounter. Having the gun only able to fire with that persons print,it doesn't get turned on the owner. There is also a theft deterrent factor due to the expense of having them reconfigured.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they ticked me off.

You need to get to any gun you can get your hands on.

Biometrics on any kind of weapon is a ridiculous concept. Granted, being disarmed and having their weapon used on them is an ever-present possibility for LEOs. But what about when it's winter time and a cop is wearing gloves, or the fact that many shootings, both civilian and law enforcement-related begin as fights, many of which end up on the ground. Now you have dirt, blood, sweat, or any number of foreign materials on your hands as a result of the fight. Good luck getting your fingerprint recognition device to work there. There are also ideas of an electronic bracelet that is worn on the strong side and if the gun gets more than a few inches away from it, it is rendered useless. This is a slightly better concept, as the circuitry today can be made for pretty rugged use, but it is still a technological answer to a training problem. Anyone who gets close to the general public in a law enforcement setting should have weapon retention training based on proven techniques, and should constantly be seeking self-improvement. I know, if a cop is hit from behind, rendered unconscious, etc, the weapon can be taken away and used. It won't take long before the criminal element knows what to look for, just as it didn't take long for them to catch on to the body armor thing. Technology is a wonderful thing, but too much makes us rely less on training, mindset, and awareness and more on the Robocop concept.

My buddies and me shoot each others guns quite a bit when we're out plinking at things. That would look pretty weird trying to shoot one of thier guns with thier hand on it. I guess you would have to go to some sort of place where you can rent one to see if it's something you want to get in the future. Really a stupid idea as far as I see it.

Just gave some of the basic ideas behind making that type of safety. You have very valid points on the drawbacks. There are quite a few. Anything that will be thought of to keep weapons with the proper owner will be circumvented in time, but the harder and more costly it is, the longer it may take. I'll have to check out the bracelet concept, thanks.

I don't know the particular science behind it, only that it supposedly uses a very low power transmitter in the bracelet and a receiver chip in the gun itself. The transmitter is only powerful enough to send the signal a few inches, so when the bracelet is worn by the shooter on the wrist, the two are in range of each other. If the gun is taken away from the shooter and held by someone else, the receiver shuts down and the gun is rendered useless. I don't know if the transmitter/receiver combo is supposed to be specifically paired, or if any bracelet will activate any receiver. I have not yet heard of this being put into practical use, but with the proliferation of all those metal bracelets for anything from breast cancer to KIA/WIA/MIA dedication bracelets, It seems like a fairly low-visibility device. I personally will never subscribe to this concept. As I stated above, I think it's a technological answer to a training problem. But then again, I'm sure that's what many people said when the red dot optics first came out.
