Have question about M16A1 and all marks that follow it

The 1 in 12" rate of twist of the M16A1 is suitable for lighter projectiles like the 55 gr M193, it is much too slow for the heavier 62 gr M855 (SS109) "green tip" round. Testing with the heavier bullet showed the 1 in 12 rifling reduced the effective range of the rifle to about 90 meters due to unstable rounds tumbling in the air. A rate of twist of 1 in 9" is the most ideal twist rate for a 62 grain round, but the 1 in 7" was chosen due to the longer length of the M856 tracer. Hope this helps a bit.
