Hello gun enthusiasts!
I just wanted to introduce myself to all you fellow firearm enthusiasts. I have visited the site several times and thought I would actually create an account so I can jump in on the discussions. NRA member and active shooter from New Mexico, USA. Primarily interested in plinking, and home/self defense. Strongly considering my concealed carry here in NM, just want to take some additional concealed carry and advanced pistol classes. I look forward to conversations with you all! "...one is allowed to resist against the unjust aggressor to one's life [...] even 'til the aggressor’s death. In fact, this act is aimed at preserving one’s life and to make the aggressor powerless. Thus, it is a good act" - Thomas Aquinas |

Welcome aboard come sit for a spell.

Can't you Open Carry in New Mexico without a permit? My ex Fiance was from Albuquerque, and from my time spent there I would for sure carry! Not bashing your city, maybe I was just in the wrong part of town!
Quinton
Welcome to the site and thanks for joining!

I'm an NRA life member,former Marine,and all around good guy,okay 2 outa 3 ain't bad,enjoy the site.

Yes, you can open carry here, although there are exceptions for so many locations (such as Universities, some government buildings, retail liquor shops etc...) that it often becomes difficult trying to remember exactly where I can carry openly and when I have to leave the gun in my car. Only saving grace is that NM considers my car an extension of my property so I can conceal or open carry in my vehicle without a permit.
Plus there are some situations where I would just rather conceal.
And yes, there are some places in town where I do not travel without my gun on me... and only if I absolutely need to.
Although I have to say I am far more concerned when I take business trips to El Paso, Tx/Las Cruces, NM.
By the way Shakleford, love the signature, awesome movie! Well the first one was anyway.
Shakleford
I'd carry an AR down there, buddy! I was in the south part of Albuquerque whan I visited....."The Valley" or something like that. NRA member from New Mexico.......Does range in your pic happen to be in Raton?
CharlesW
Born in San Diego but grew up in Albuquerque.
We went out there 2 years ago and she was
shocked how far out it has grown in the last
few years..
I'm going to try to get a bunch together from
GUNSLOT to go to Ratton next summer to
visit the Whittington Center and do some
shooting.

Great bunch of guys and girl, but be sure not to feed the animals.
HampsterW
one of my sisters lives in Albuquerque.
mattitude
Hampster, except for the areas Shakle was speaking of its a great little town!
Manu, which ones are the animals I have to watch out for? Does Hampster qualify?
manu2014
Hamp is pretty harmless. ebear is another story.
HampsterW
harmless....LOL! I think we have touched on open carry here a time of twelve but here goes......Here in UT open carry is legal, but why oh why attract attention to yourself? People who are ignorant of the law will not hesitate to call the cops if they see you with a gun on your hip, which is really a big inconvenience, CC is a much better way to go.
mattitude
Agreed Hampster, outside the ABQ city limits it is pretty well known that you can open carry legally and you usually won't be bothered. But I was at an "upscale" burger joint a couple of months ago that serves beer and a gentleman walked in with his 1911 strapped to his hip. Although it is legal to carry in establishments that do not serve hard liquor, you should have seen the looks he got from obviously worried customers.
manu2014
Same here in NC. Better to know than be known...
mattitude
Yeah, the South Valley is the area I would be most concerned about, although there is a small part of the city near the airport that is lovingly referred to as "the war zone" that I stay away from also.
No the range in the picture is the City of Albuquerque range out on the west edge of town. As far as municipal ranges go, I am fairly impressed. We have 2 very good gun clubs/ranges here also, Zia and Del Norte, but I can't financially justify the annual dues when I am only able to get out to the range maybe 6 times a year.
That needs to change.
Shakleford
That needs to change, for sure! Looks like a nice range , though!
Shakleford
You should just put your ebear video in with your warning! LOL!
HampsterW
of creative after a couple of beers.....yipeeeeeeee!!

We have a indoor range hear that has 3 stations. 2 pistol/small bore and the 100m range for large caliber. The only place I can shoot the long guns inside. I thought they were fairly uncommon. Do most have a county owned range?
mattitude
Very few county ranges out here, the ABQ range is actually operated by both City of Albuquerque and Bernalillo county.
The range here has:
# Rifle, pistol and muzzleloading
# 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 yard targets
# 3 skeet ranges
# 2 trap ranges
# Silhouette range (competition only)
There is also a private indoor range near my home on the north end of town, but at $20/day or $250/year its still too expensive. Plus you can't shoot rifle caliber higher than .223.
HampsterW
ecaman has one down in Payson out at the local landfill, if you want to call it that, it's more of a place to shoot than a range. There is only one range that is suitable for rifles here but I never go there as it is always 'assholes and elbows' during the times that I am available to shoot. I just head west out into the desert for rifle practice, I have the whole place to myself..lol
manu2014
I wish I had one here. To many F'n people here now. Wake county is runing out of land to develop and the farmers several counties out are really tight because of all the bozos that do stupid stuff. The indoor range is very strict which is good but you are aleays stopping for one reason or another. Hard to get in a good rhythm.
Vaquero
I hope you stick around. NM seems to be lacking representation here.
I like ABQ myself, I reckon I haven't strayed to the bad part of town.
Me and TBH love the Route 66 Hotel and Casino as a stopover when traveling west.
mattitude
Thanks vaquero, I hope to stick around, you all seem to be a good bunch.
I enjoy albuquerque as well, I think many larger cities have bad areas of town. I think its only a small portion though.
I haven't spent much time at route 66 casino but we sure have our share of tribal casinos around here!
HampsterW
was that guy who was a wrench for the Goodyear or whatever and I think there was one other but I can't remember their screen names, they just didn't stick around very long. I agree with Vaquero, mattitude, you seem like a good guy and we hope that you stick around.

Welcom to GunsLot
I ived in Albuquerque for 10 years. Got really bad Hooked on Roasted Hatch Green Chilis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know of one skeet range out south on I-25 Past Rio Bravio, but the smell from the
chicken ranch and the slaughter house, on a hot day will make you sick! Hell you can't breath!!
Is West Gate still a bad part to be in?? That place when I lived there needed to be Bull Dozed under.
From 9 mile hill, at night, Alb. is very nice looking!
Lyle
mattitude
Yes sir roasted green chile is like a drug out here. Very good and addicting.
West Gate is still around, although I wouldn't be as hesitant to drive around there as I would the south valley at night it is not somewhere I enjoy visiting. Really is the edge of the south valley.
But don't let all this talk make you think we live in a dangerous outlaw city, really the bad parts of town account for only 15% or less of albuquerque metro area.
Im not sure where that skeet range is. My guess is that it is no longer around.
